Dallas Austin American Statesman

Postby SWC Grey Hair » Mon Aug 06, 2007 10:25 am

Here we go again! It must be football season because the Dallas Morning News(aka Dallas Austin American Statesman) has their UT front page spread back up. It is bad enough they don't give us any coverage as the hometown team but if I were a fan of TT, Baylor, or A&M I would be hacked also. The DMN helped bury us and they are doing everything possible to keep us down. The last thing they want is for us to get going again and give the Horns any competition for the front page. What I would give for a little competition from another newspaper.

I just want to be sure I understand here: Are you contending that the DMN is doing this in spite of the fact that ad revenues would be greater if they went in another direction?

Isn't this just supply meeting demand? Or are you saying that Supply is creating demand?

It's the same with buying Mustang gear at retail stores: Ask for it when it's not available and Buy it when it is.

What I would give for a little on-field performance by SMU warranting more coverage.

This is where I get confused. I thought everyone was happy with all the negative press given the UT thugs over the past few weeks. Should we not have been complaining about all the coverage they were giving to UT? Not only does everyone want the paper to stop reporting to their largest circulation base, but they want them to continue to do so when the news is bad for UT. Seems like we need a good dictator to take over our news reporting outlets.

If we build it they will report.

I am saying that the DMN is biased toward UT. I understand the economic reality that we don't buy as many papers as UT but there are as many A&M and TT fans in Dallas as UT and they don't get the coverage UT does. We aren't even on their radar screen any more. We are like a high school in their eyes.

I also am old enough to remember how the DMN and Ch 8 gloated over the fact that they helped us receive the death penalty and I will always resent that. We were wrong in what we did but as history has proved, we were singled out in the harsh penalty we received and I don't remember the DMN pointing that out in any column.

If you understand the economics of the Media, then how can you say that DMNs is biased? They are selling to willing consumers and right now that means major coverage of UT.

You suggest that A$M and Blech have the same monetary draw in Dallas as UT, but I disagree with that. Perhaps there are as many Alumni here, but I think you're underestimating the number of fans that UT draws beyond their student/alumni population. Either way, I sincerely doubt that the Dallas Morning News is covering UT more than the economic data dictates that they should.

As for their role in the Death Penalty. They were bragging about playing an integral part in the biggest sports story of the year. That should be a surprise to nobody.

We're not victims here and we weren't victims there.

They won the national championship two years ago.
They are the state school of Texas.
They are one of the most historic programs in the history of CFB.
NFL rosters are lined with their alums.
They make money.
We have topped 6 wins 0 times in two decades.

Shut up.

What about the vaunted UT thug coverage in the DMN of late? There sure has been a bunch of it, as your insane buddy has rightfully pointed out, and as you note I have admitted as part of my butt-kicking. You offsetting the free recruiting publicity for that, sunshine?

SMU will get the coverage in the DMN if and when it wins again. In the meantime, I would recommend you read the front page stories on ponyfans. They are well done and provide jus tthe kind of sunshiny coverage you crave.

Dave Stanley handed that story to WFAA on a silver platter, and any journalist worth anything would have done the same thing.

Maybe you should have upped your contribution to Stanley so he'd keep his story to himself.

Wow! I can't believe the support the DMN is receiving on this topic. Guess I was wrong to question their integrity and support for that great school in Austin. They are the greatest. Hook'em.

This is the first time I have posted in several years. The tone of the replies is a little discouraging. You can disagree without being a jerk.

BTW- Per his mother, Stanley was paid $25,000 by Ch.8 for his story. He committed suicide last year.
