Future Heisman in Willis?

Postby Mustang98 » Wed Aug 08, 2007 12:29 pm

I noticed Justin Willis is a Manning Award finalist. If Willis continues to improve each year and stays for his senior season, could he be considered a Heisman candidate? If so, could SMU have the resources to promote him accordingly when that time comes?

If he is in a place to be considered for a Heisman, SMU would have the resources. But let's not put the cart before the horse (yes I will shortly be selling Willis for Heisman tee-shirts, but that's beside the point).... point is, if Willis is in that position it mean we will have some damn successful years. And of course, alums would come out of the wood work to support the campaign.

Just my two cents.

Oh an yeah, Flanigan was once mentioned in off the cuff Heisman specualtion on ESPN.... I don't see any reason why he wouldn't warrant, if his career trends upwards.

No. He will never be good enough for that. He's a good, not a great QB.

Check to see how many votes the guy from Hawaii gets this year. Not many would be my guess. He would be a good barometer for any non BCS player.

Willis simply has no chance at a Heisman. Furthermore, he won't leave SMU before his senior year unless his playing career is over.

Willis would have to take SMU to the BCS game and Win...... You know, that might be alittle hard to pull off.

Don't need resources, just recycling:

Except that the Heisman is awarded before the bowl games, so it would be even harder to pull off. The winner will never come from a non-BCS conference if things remain the same as they are now.
It's a crappy job but someone's gotta do it.

The best player does not always win...prime example: Eric Dickerson.

Hey I was talking about a Heisman campaign/hype.... responding to the body of the thread starter, rather than the subject.

Will he be mentioned in Heisman conversation if his career trends upwards - absolutely. If that happens will SMU put forth a campaign - of course.

Now talking about him winning... yeah, that's a pipe dream. No point in actually discussing that at this point. Right now, let's just watch, and hopefully watch his career trend upwards.

Again, that won't stop me from selling Willis for Heisman shirts.

(For the record... I think a non-BCS player definitely can win, though unlikely.... This year, however, if Hawaii can somehow go undefeated and earn a BCS birth.... Colt Brennan will be on that stage... and then, who knows? It's not like there's a clear cut Vince Young this year.... oh wait, sorry, whoopsy daisy - it's not like there is a clear cut Reggie Bush this year. )

if JW was in a BCS conference, kept improving, and put up big numbers each year, he might get a few 3rd, 4th, 5th place votes but dont expect much hype. I remember years ago when UNT put out a heisman campaign for their star DT and Houston did its best for Kolb last year but its ultimately handicapped to win the Heisman if youre not in a BCS conference.

Colt Brennan will put up HUGE numbers again this year and WILL be invited to NYC but most likely wont finish better than 3rd, unless his team goes undefeated and makes the BCS line up

JW is good but lets wait until next year for the possible Heisman chatter for him.

Seriously. I just need him to get through this year... just look at D-Mart last year... and let us do a dance to the football gods that this year is a return to form for the DeMartinizer.

I hate to bring it up but theres always that so called "sophmore slump"...it i cant really put names to people it has happenend to but it has happend in the past. players have really great freshmen years or first years and then kick the bucket that next year and Dmart was a prime example of that...so lets all wish JW the BEST year possible!
