My respects for summer time pre-season practice

As we begin to get summer time temperatures for the first time, I think about football workouts in this weather and renew my respect for the men in uniform who wear our colors during these sweltering days. Anyone who ever practiced in such weather knows the price our guys are paying for the glory of their school. Win or lose, everyone of them has my respect for the effort they are putting out. Pony up, big team.

I just mowed my lawn for 15 minutes and I am worn out. I can't imagine wearing pads and being out there right now.

He was great at Maryland and with the Chargers, but he really should have stayed retired instead of coaching Army.

Every one of them. They also have cabins and little ponds, which can become lakes if you wish. You can do whatever you want , it's your picture.

Sorry, I got a little caught up in the moment. My wife watched this guy religiously and I actually bought her an oil painting set and his instruction guide. Her trees are kind of scarey though.

In the summer of 1976, Ron Meyer’s first two a days were not really two a days. They were three a days for those with 'special team' potential. And a Fr from Shreveport was special teams potential. The heat at the Cotton Bowl was such that it burned the soles of one’s feet if one stood too long (about 30 seconds). Often one would stand on one foot till it got too hot and then change to the other foot. Often, one would just start counting minutes till a water break. It was very hot on Astro turf. And heaven help one if they were involve in a play were they had to come into football contact with that hellish turf.

In the summer of 1980, Ron Meyer held true two a days. During one of the hottest summers on record, practice began earlier in the mornings and were started later in the evenings to avoid the heat. Once, after a pleasant evening practice, ending about 10 PM, it had finally cooled down to 101. The middle of the day was filled with meetings but at least one wasn’t outside.

The heat in Dallas in August is a real female dog. It takes a huge toll on one physically and mentally. It truly is an immersion into a level of intensity rarely experienced. I imagine is it not any easier now and perhaps more difficult and the young men out there working hard for the season truly desire a great deal of respect.

And the nice thing about all this is while they are out there catching a few rays and sweating off a pound or two, we can kick back, have a few ice cold ones and discuss the upcoming season.
