Phil On Channel 5's Sunday Night Sports ExtraCoach will be the in-studio guest for KXAS's Sunday Night Sports Extra this Sunday, 8/12. The show airs at 10:30 p.m.
Now I know I live in Austin so I could be completely making this up... but aren't channel 5's call letters KXAS?
(I used to watch a lot of Thursday night shows.) ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
No problem.... I think it's probably the recent death of that KTLA channel 5 newscaster, Hal Fishman (that made some news), that got that in your head. And the sun doesn't help ..... and perunapower hopefully not. Plus, let's hope that KXAS posts it on their website. Or somebody YouTubes it. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
I watched him for several years in OC; enjoyed him. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
Not much new.
Primarily said he is one year behind where he wanted the program. He thought they would be in a bowl his 4th or 5th year. Said he underestimated the status of the program when he took the job. [He should have checked with ponyfans] Talked about their committment this year to "finish" and the fact that in November last year THEY controlled their own destiny, but didn't "finish". Commented that this is the first year since he arrived he has had an experienced returning QB. All in all, a good interview and more good media coverage for the Stangs. Just send 'da money.
don't you wish sometimes these coaches-especially Phil Bennett-would actually give some interesting factual information about their program instead of these canned, flag waving, self serving rah rah cheerleading rambles that nauseate even the most ardent fan of the coaches' school. I know this is the rule rather than the exception for most coaches and is mostly due to the format but it just makes one want to puke. I listened to Phil's 30 minute press conference and I'm not sure I learned a thing. He's made the same speech to just about every reporter that I've heard.
Yeah, but does any coach in any sport ever say anything, really?
Not like Bennett is ever going to say, "We are absolutely lost in our Cover 2 zone. God forbid somebody ever throws a crossing pattern at us. Oh, and our short yardage on offense really stinks; I'd rather take a false start at the goalline than actually try to punch it in from a yard out." I prefer the rah rah rah to the flat out lying of Todd Graham.
Stallion,
At least you got your post count increased by 1. You really provided a lot of meaningful information with that post. Just like Phil Bennett did in his interview. Just send 'da money.
Here's a Hot Sports Opinion from a Head Coach-Note the Shot Across the Bow of the Administration Even Before the Problem is Solved. Similar to Steve Spurrier's Warning to the South Carolina Administration About Admissions:
Toledo speaks on his Tulane team......ouch. "If we want to be physical, we have to have physical practices," Toledo said. "And right now, we may be the weakest team I've ever been associated with. We're also playing 12 straight weeks, so conditioning is a major concern." The team as a whole might have been in better shape, Toledo said, had more than 40 players participated in summer conditioning work at the school. "That was a major disappointment to me," he said. "It's very expensive to have the whole team here, but if we're going to make a commitment to winning football games, it's something we've got to do. I've expressed my feelings to the administration, and they have promised to give it strong consideration for next summer." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You're exactly right, Blog. If a coach sees something negative, he's not going to throw it out there for public consumption — it's bad for business. "We're slow and inexperienced, and I think we're going to get smoked in every game we play this year … but be sure to rush right out and buy season tickets." Or, if a starter is hurt and a backup has to play, do you expect that to be announced to the opposition? Make The Leach think he has to prepare for the "regular" starters, and if an injury can throw him for a loop, even if it's just for a play or two, why not do it? Coaches don't say much. The halftime interviews are far worse than the "we're going to try to do well this year" speeches like we get in the preseason.
