Fellow alums have lost their daughter

Postby George S. Patton » Sat Aug 11, 2007 10:16 am

I'm putting this on this board because it gets the most traffic.

For those who may or may not know, Mike and Barbara Shropshire, SMU alums from around 1971 or 1972, earlier this week lost their 29-year-old daughter Kate.

Kate had been dealing with a series of illnesses connected with pneumonia since February. She passed away Tuesday. There was a vigil on Friday. Kate will be buried today (Saturday, 8/11).

Even if you don't know the Shropshires, just know they are good SMU alums. They live in Fort Worth but Mike works in Dallas. My wife and I grew close with them over the years. Forgive me, but this is very hard for me because I really grew close with Kate.

Kate was a nurse practioner. She leaves behind her parents and her sister and a series of other relatives.

I don't think there could be anything worse in the world than a parent outliving their child. That shouldn't happen.

Please keep the Shropshires in your prayers and thoughts and that they will know we are with them through this difficult time.

The family should be in all of our prayers.

Just to let you all know, the funeral and buriel services were quite uplifting in spite of this tragic loss. The church was packed with people standing in the chapel and outside. That's what this family meant to people.

I'm very happy to see the number of views this posting has received. That reveals the character of the SMU community. We may not always agree on certain things, but we are there for each other in times like these.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

RIP Kate

Sympathy and condolences to Kate's family and friends from one who wished he had known such a nice person in this life time. Shalom.
