Pony Up Billboard

I saw one of the billboards for the Pony Up campaign today heading south on Central at Knox St. It has an SMU helmet on it, and the words "We don't tailgate, we boulevard" and the pony with the up arrow in the lower left corner.

I'm just not sure who they are trying to target with the campaign. I don't know that we are well know enough even in Dallas for people to understand what the billboard is making reference to.

My huge gut tells me it is a full campaign that will need to TV ads, print ads, radio spots, and billboards to tie everything in. Hopefully if the billboards are up they will be doing the rest of it very soon.

It means, inorder to know what "we boulevard" means, you have to come out to a game and see because im sure that most people that have never been on campus dont know that the boulevard is where all the tailgating action is...or something to that extent...i dont even know anymore

We're three weeks away. Are they going to start this advertising blitz after the Tech game?

Ok...I've supported the wait-until-we-see-the-full-picture campaign, but that's stupid! My thoughts, if I were an outsider, would probably be, "Why don't they tailgate? That doesn't sound like fun."

For anybody that's been to an SMU game in the last 6 years, they probably know what that means; however, I don't think it's going to get any new butts in the seats. It even sounds a little snobby and elitist.

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that's part of the point. Ponyfans are more or less an exclusive bunch. That's a fact driven by the futility of following this team perhaps, but its a fact none the less. I think that the Ad folks are trying to ping on this exclusivity to generate buzz.

It's almost an inside joke, with the goal of encouraging people to find out more about it: To generate some investigatory interest. I imagine there will be more Perunaisms (to coin a phrase) to follow.

If I were an outsider I would read the rest of the statement before asking a question.

I guess my major concern is that most people don't know we are here. There is nothing on the billboard that would tell you what it was advertising for unless you are already familiar with the uniforms and logo of the university. If you aren't familiar with the trappings of the university you are going to look at the billboard and just wonder what the hell they are talking about.

We need to have an Andrew Jackson night and for those that buy tickets (i dont know how much they actually are but am assuming they are more than $20) and stay for the WHOLE game, get a clean crisp new $20 bill once they leave the stadium...im sure all the rich folks in HP, UP, Park Cities, and North Dallas can spare a few 20s...

im sure well get butts in the stands then...but they MUST stay for the WHOLE game...kind of like when the mavs gave out free airline tickets at the very last home game of last years season.

Confirming what I was afraid of... people who don't know what it's about will see an arrow pointing at downtown, away from campus. Hopefully those who do recognize it as an SMU ad aren't going to think we're back in the Cotton Bowl again.

Do you ask your coworkers? Are you intrigued enough to look into it?

Or, when more information is provided by the campaign (purely theoretical of course), do you think back and say "Now I get it" and feel some sense of belonging now that you're in on the joke?

It's just a teaser, meant to whet appitites for more information.

There is also a billboard right next to Chick Fila on central and southwestern that says "No longer a Black Hourse" with the Pony Up

Got to go with Cadillac on this one. Sounds like a clean, simple, smart ad campaign to me. I'd like to see it, though. Maybe somebody can take a pic w/ their cellphone and post it here.

So these are the first SMU football billboards in how long? In all seriousness these the first of the century?
