I know there was a thread earlier about athletic budgets. While we can always use, more...take out the BCS schools and we are second...behind who? Well, our purple friends to the West.

There are quite a few schools you would not expect behind us.

We are number 1 by over $6Mil in CUSA and Number 2 outside the BCS behind only the Horny Toads.

If they would turn off the lights at Ford instead of leaving them on all the time, we might be able to cut that in half.

Let's clarify this before anyone gets too excited. These are ranked by expenses, not revenue and not gross profit. I can promise you if you looked at the other side of the ledger we would not be ahead of schools like Iowa State. Just the Big 12 bowl revenue sharing alone would vault ISU way ahead of us.

I thought the point in showing this was to show that SMU was spending money on their athletic program, not that they were making money on it.

That is the point-money ain't the problem SMU can't excell in the lower echelons of Division 1A. Never has been as I've pointed out. The Model not money is why SMU hasn't gone bowling, been the Tournament or won championships at least in the WAC Lite and CUSA.

It's really hard to establish much from just a topline expense number. Does a capital expenditure for $13m towards the basketball facility count in our $32m figure? I believe Stallion posted several months ago the athletic budgets for DI schools and our budget was in the $17m range. I know we borrow from the university annually to cover the athletic deficit, but I find it hard to believe we are running a $15m gap year in and year out.
