Senior QB Al Pena, who transferred from Oklahoma State, quit the team to coach high school football. He was competing with sophomore Blake Joseph and redshirt freshman Case Keenum for the UH QB job. I would guess this means Briles told Pena he was no longer in the mix for the starting job and would be a backup if he stayed with the program. thats just me speculating of course. Here is the link from the Houston Chronicle.

I thought Peña was the odds-on favorite to start.
Hopefully he was the best of the three.

My guess is that he was not going to go the starting position and when he saw that was evident or found out that someone else was going to get the starting position he bowed out of the team. He didn't really have a future on the team since he had transferred his remaining eligibility to UH for a graduate degree.

Well, that's a bummer. Fans were excited about Pena because he's the only QB on the roster with any decent snaps in college. I guess it took too long to pick up the offense and he thought he could just come right in and assume Kolb's spot.

Case Keenum, RS-Freshman, is apparently the leader. He doesn't have a particularly strong arm but seems to be a leader type and can run well.

Blake Joseph is another contender and LJ Castille is a 3-star QB in high school that's moved to wide receiver.

If he was the best of the three, wouldn't he be the starter? What am I missing?

Well, the RS Freshman that can run well without a particularly strong arm did all right for us last year.
