"I'm Not Putting All The Marbles On This Game" Coach Bennett

I opened the DMN sports page this morning to the unfortunate news that Cory Muse is likely out for the Tech game and to top it off Coach Bennett says "he's not putting all the marbles on this game". That statement is Bennett's way of preparing us for a good ole A-Whippin. First of all i know one game doesn't make or break a team's season unless you're playing for a National championship. Therefore, there was no need for Bennett to make that horrible statement.

Secondly, I hope he's wrong but that statement says to me that the coach is already chalking this game up as a Loss. This Loser Mentality really ticks me off. I guarantee you Gary Patterson would never say something like that if it were TCU in the same situation.

We as SMU football fans have to be the most naive fans in the world, second to only the Texas Ranger Fans. I hate to say this and I again hope Im wrong but this will more than likely be another season with just enough success to keep us on the edge of our seats and just enough failure to break our hearts once again.

The excuse this season, will be a lack of experience on Defense and that is no excuse for another subpar season. It is Coach Bennett's job to make sure he has recruited adequate replacements for the seniors we lose.

I support our athletes but if you were a player, how would you interpret that statement?

I interpret PB's comment to mean that he is not going to risk his best and most experienced player on the front seven aggevating an injury and making it worse in the first game of the season.

Coach would be torched if he rushed Muse back and he played in the Tech game only to injure his groin even worse and miss several games. Everyone would be saying 'why risk him the first game of the season when we haven't even started conference play.'

so let me get this straight: Our D-line will have effectively 4 new starters across the board (yes I know Handy started here and there last year, but you know what I mean). If Hawkins goes at MLB, two of our three LBs will be starting in new positions, and we'll have a new starter at FS.

More support for what I said previously, when PB said to "be patient." That is, he hopes to have something figured out by conference play, but don't be shocked when there's 40 to 60 hung on the board by Tech.

Note to Steve O: How do you think it would've gone over if Charlie Weis would've said he's not putting all his marbles on one game? Or Ara or Dan Devine?

In reading the whole article, it is obvious to me that coach is talking about Cory when he is referring the 'marbles'. I don't blame him. I would rather have Cory healthy and available for the rest of the season than have his injury reaggravated against TT. However, the article says that Cory might miss the game, not that he is out for sure. Hopefully he heals quickly over the next few days of rest.

Now I remember why Bennett drives me nuts.

You just don't say stuff like that.

As many times as we have said Bennett has lost his marbles, I do not mind if he tries to hang on to a few.

I do admit he could have worded it better, but I am certain he is merely referring to Cory and not losing him for an extended period. Remember, as good as it would be to do both, winning CUSA is more important than beating Tech.

He's forgotten more about marbles than any of us will ever know....

I am concerrned about our defense.

I'm so glad this thread's headline is a quote that is COMPLETELY taken out of context.

And I'm really irritated that some of you suffering from knuckleheaditis getting all wound up about the a quote regarding marble and that we're being set up to lose.

That's a lot of crap.

I think we all need to wait until TUESDAY in order to find out where Muse is. Until then, CHILL OUT.

It's ridiculous.

Like I have said before, Cory is a good kid and a good player, but he can't stay healthy. This is what we're looking at, he missed spring because of his second knee surgery, had very limited work this summer because of rehab, and he's only practiced several times during training camp because of precaution and now this groin pull. So you know he can't be in tip top condition. Bennett may need to get the balin' wire and duct tape out for this defense.

You're right. Doesn't exactly fire up the fans, either. If I was contemplating going to the game, this statement might make me want to save my ticket money and sit on my ars in front of the TV... wait for a game in which more marbles were involved.

Just an absolute horse@#$% mentality out there. Freakin' go and support the squad regardless of whose playing.

That is a dumb#$% excuse.

I'm sorry, but I'm really peeved at some of woosbags out there who will find every oddball excuse.

If you don't go to this game, then DON'T GO ALL SEASON.

The questions should be: Who will be taking his spot? What kind of rotation will they use? Are we going to see true freshmen roaming the field at that position? Anyone?

If non-conference games don't matter as some suggest then why not hold Muse out until CUSA play starts? Might we need a couple of non-conference wins to help us possibly be bowl eligible this year?

is he ever going to put all the marbles in one game so we actually get a win on opening day? i'd rather leave everything on the field and pull an upset, compared to getting our [deleted] handed to us and starting the season with another opening loss.
