Yet again....

Postby Dwan » Tue Sep 04, 2007 6:08 pm

Is there anything worse that being a SMU Football Fan post DP. Cubs fans have nothng on us and nor do red sox fans pre world series a few years back. They at least have heart-ache to deal with, coming close but feeling like your team is cursed. With SMU football, it has been 20 years of pathetic with maybe a tie to AM in 94 or beating TCU in 05, and going 6-6 in 06 as our great moments

I guess what gets me is this is the first season when there was a legitmate sense of hope. Opening on National TV, the Blvd becoming a great pre-game ritual, hope of a winning season, positive press on the program coming into the game, a near capacity crown and only 8-10 point underdogs against Texas Tech. Certainly all things that show that turning the corner is in sight.

And then this. A grossly undersized team. Our DL look like LBs and our LBs look like safeties. Awful tackeling. Playing a team that you know is going to pass 90% of the time and not having the right defenses called, the personel to play, lacking the ability to make tackles, no pass rush, and then giving up every meaningful third and long. I thought we hired a defensive genius....actually, that is what we where sold. We hired a poistion coach who took over players and a system that was put in place by Mike Stoops and coached them for 3 years as a DC. Say want you want about the job Mike Stoops as done at Arizona, but he is a great defensive mind and although his teams have not been good, at least they play good defense. I mean, in the state of Texas would it be possible to find high school D-linemen who weigh on average more than 249 pounds? Expecting former walk-ons at WR to make plays in double coverage against big 12 level talent.

And dont even get me started on the offense and the play calling. Fact of the matter is, in season one from the Death Penalty, we looked like a high school team playing against division 1-A schools and we basically were....now 20 years later, we look like a good high school team playing against 1-A talent......

At least we have "metrics" in place this year: if we don't go to a bowl game, there will be a coaching change, by almost everyone's understanding. So let's see what happens the rest of the season...
