where the heck is phillip burley? i guess were not gonna use our tallest wide receiver? our receivers are all short, wish we'd use him

He's a tight end.
Learning a new position, coming off a major knee injury.
I would think any playing time this year would be on special teams, as it's unlikely he'd unseat Chase AND McKinney AND Walker.

I was wondering the same thing about Burley. Look at UNT. Number 49 who torched us along with Fitzgerald was a big guy who didn't appear to be super fast. Surely Burley could fill the Pellerin/Bobby Chase role. As it is, we have Sanders, Givens, and Lowrey who are all average sized and the small and slow Sledge who made a nice recovery after his terrible first game, but still has zero chance of gaining yards after the catch or providing a big target. Get Burley on the field to give Willis a bigger target. Of course, we could utilize our huge and sure handed TE Chase as well.

We can always count on our great coaching staff to finally win a recruiting battle with Big 12 schools by signing a great receiver, switch him to a new position and put him on the bench. I love my mustangs but Phillip would have been better off going to Kansas.


We have some of the worst talent evaluators in the business. They put all big two way linemen on offense and leave our d-line undersized every recruiting class. They put our highly recruited receiver who happens to have some size on the bench, as a backup tight end. Our coaches need to sit down and watch a few games on Sunday. Plaxico Burress, Randy Moss, just a couple of examples of big receivers who make good things happen on the field. You don't have to be 5'2 and run a 4.0 to be effective. Phillip would give Justin another needed option at wide out. Givens drops too many balls.

Larry Edmondson, the receivers coach, was at our table for the kickoff luncheon. I asked him about Burley and he told me that he is being moved to tight end and that he is not ready. He didn't elaborate on exactly what that meant.

Every receiver of size is moved to TE.

Every LB of size is moved to DE.

Now we have no physical WR or LB.

I wonder why?

It's a damn shame too. Burley was touted by some on this board of an example of how Bennett can land the prized recruit. Well, landing him I guess was one thing, finding a way to use him is something else. And JasonB has nailed it, it's not like we couldn't use an outside receiver with some height.

All of our backup TE spots were taken with ex Dual Threat QB's. It was a numbers game or they would have been.

I'm going WAAAAY out on a limb here, and suggesting that his size had less to do with his conversion to TE than his speed post knee work.

I would have to think thats it. Jason and everyone else above is right, we could badly use a receiver with some size, you'd have to think he is just terribly slow right now, even then...we sure could use his size at WR
