Isn't Jim Gush the DC? Shouldn't he also be held accountable for the poor defensive performance just as any offensive woes are blamed on Rusty Burns the OC?

DMN - Show Some Civic Pride

I'm sorry but it really pisses me off when the local newspaper dogs us like this. I think that it is the kids who suffer and that is not fair. We all know that our defense is in trouble but come on......listen to the home announcers for the Rangers - their team sucks and they still pour love on them!

Who has the worst offense in the country? Notre Dame and they'll still put 80,000 bums in seats.

I don't think our defense "suffering" is such a bad thing. If i was a defensive player this article would motivate me.

But they've got Touchdown Jesus.

Hey, why don't we build one of those suckers at the north end of the stadium? Or maybe Touchdown Doak.

Bottom line is bring the corners up and do a little bumping.
We have fast guys and they play well when close enough.

I think that is the change that needs to be seen.

Go Mustangs and coaches.

Why not switch to a 3-3-5 scheme to have an extra safety? whatever they do, its not going to work right

Remember when TCU beat Tech last year? That's exactly what they did, brought the corners up and bumped the recievers at the line of scrimmage. Totally threw off the timing and the routes.

If nothing else, that could at least help our secondary now.

A story from our past.

2001. ASU has a horrific secondary, just dreadful, an OK linebacking corps, pretty good downline men. Defensive coordinator was dropping 7 into pass coverage, sometimes 8 and at times even 9. We can't stop the pass for nothing.
2002. Roberts is hired, basically the same line-up on defense. Our pass defense gets better and we set a school record for sacks and increased the number of interceptions. The difference was that they moved folks up, hit the receivers at the line and brought pressure often. It still wasn't a very good pass defense but instead of forcing a weak secondary to try to cover for a long time we tried to force a throw before the ability difference had enough time to really show.

My fave part of the article:

"Meager's 601 passing yards against the Mustangs last week were the most by an individual against SMU, topping Houston's Andre Ware, who passed for 517 yards vs. SMU in 1989, when he won the Heisman."

Of course Ware did that in half of a game so the comparison is a little lacking.

Exactly what I thought, and I was there. And David Klingler added another 250?

Supporting SMU is like living in London during the blitz. The buzz bombs are dropping on our heads. Where's the air raid shelter?

DMN Article wrote:So what exactly is the problem?

"It was a combination," Bennett said. "We had some guys cramping. Lost concentration. We had some rush problems, that we didn't get any pressure. And we had some total coverage busts."

Bennett said part of the problem was fatigue, caused by the quick turnaround from the Tech game.
PB, stop making excuses and start producing results.
