The results of a University of Texas at San Antonio student referendum that could help open the door to a football team are due out today, and opinions vary so wildly it's hard to predict the outcome.
Whether students vote yea or nay, one thing is clear: The fact that UTSA is even pondering Division I football is proof positive that it is bent on blossoming from a little-known commuter college into a full-fledged campus with a national reputation.
Football isn't the only road to that goal. Attracting top-notch faculty, a bigger endowment, more degree programs and more on-campus housing also are key ingredients. But even non-boosters recognize the unique power of football to generate school spirit, energize alumni and attract national attention.
"We're right at that borderline," said Courtney Horn, a 20-year-old sophomore from Corpus Christi. "One more thing and we are going to be huge, one of the best universities in the state. I think the football would do it."

Everyone knows SMU is the best and I can say that because I am a terrific homer.

There's lots of area around there to build a stadium, but they need to claim the land quickly. It is being developed very rapidly. Although they could maybe use the nice, new high school stadium down the road.

...shall we scheme to keep them from reaching their potential and relegate them to the Sun Belch?

I think we should reserve that little honor only for the NTSU green eagles.

UTSA already belongs to the Southland Conference in other sports so - if approved - it would only make sense for them to be in that conference.

As a native born of San Antonio, I can guarantee that UTSA will not get good local attendance for a college football team. UTSA football will lose money.

The UTSA referendum passed with 3,031 students voting for and 1,571 against, with 65.9 percent supporting an enhanced athletics program. UTSA has an enrollment of 28,000+. The Roadrunners will play in hte Alamodome if the school's governing board approves adding a football program. The CUSA can now look south.
