Best name I can come up with right now.

Big Name - Yes
Can he coach - Yes
Would he consider SMU - Yes (remember last year, he was one of the finalists for the Rice job, so if he would interview and seriously consider Rice, SMU should fit)

I would also have to imagine that Orsini has at least some relationship/conversations with him in the years they were both in Florida.

I didn't know Coker was a finalist for the Rice job. And Rice chose Bailiff? Did the committee not see th 1-AA playoff game where Bailiff blundered the game away?

Here's a guy who coached at Miami. Yeah that Miami.
Here's a guy who coached at Texas State. No not that Texas State.

And they hired who?

Baliff is a good coach. Not in the same name recognition as Coker, et al. but a good coach none the less. He was Franchione's defensive guy for years, and most impressively was the defensive coordinator for TCU under Patterson for several years in the early 2000's before heading back to TS/SHSU. I would assume that Rice balked at Coker having a higher asking price than Baliff, but that shouldn't be an obstacle for us right, right, right ??????

Rice puts more emphasis on things like image and academics than most schools do. Coker was never big on either.

i sat in the stands disgusted today (yes, in goddamned jonesboro arkansas)... some of the player's mothers have better play-calling abilities.

among some of the qoutes i heard:

"why do they keep calling that slow running play up the middle that keeps going nowhere"

"why cant we change the defense they dont keep making long 3rd down passes"

"why do we do that stupid thing on the field goals (ep's)

"we should have kicked the field goal"

"why dont we blitz?"

....so i guess we might as well hire one of the Moms; better than Bennett... or perhaps Larry Coker would be OK.

Sounds like an improvement to me. Which mother, in particular, do you have in mind? Don't wait for Monday, make the recommendation to Orsini TODAY!

Coker was handed the keys to a Lamborghini and he drove it into a ditch.

I'd love to see a busted up Lamborghini in my driveway, versus this Pinto with 4 mismatched wheels I've been looking at for the last several seasons.

They call the slow running play up the middle because they want to see if DMart and O-line actually have horse.

They do change the defense on 3rd down...no telling how many times they switched up between variation of zone blitz & cover 3.

They do the swinging gate because it gives the opposing team one more item to prep for...which it doesn't, but you know what I mean.

Yeah, they should have kicked the field goal...but tell that to JWill who wants to go for it every time...and Lowry who came this close....

They do blitz... a lot....but it doesn't seem to help because their pass rush is inconsistent, and that is being generous.

Guys, this is simple. The defense is struggling, and losing the battle.

Fix that, and frankly, SMU is back in it for the rest of the season. If there is any truer test of Bennett's abilities, it is that. Seriously, if the offense's back is against the wall 50% less than it is, SMU wins that game.

Count me among the anti-Coker Club. I'm really at a loss of which Coach to go for right now. Of course, Todd Dodge and Todd Graham and probably Gary Gibbs would have been Finalists on my list before this season plus any quality Coach with a proven track record preferrably with some Texas or at least Southwest experience. I doubt Graham would make a 3rd move in 3 years. I'd wait to see how Dodge does this season at North Texas but I'd still have him on my list. I've always been intriqued with Gibbs because he got shafted a OU but he's moved on to Pro Ball. Hey I'd take a close look at what Turner Gill is doing at Buffalo. But right now I have not heard of a Coach I can wholeheartedly support.

hire Coker only if you let Butch Davis put the program together, get all the right recruits, and then hand it to Coker so he looks good. for once i agree with stallion. yeah he won alot of games with Butch Davis players, but then he let the storied program go down hill. smu should not hire larry coker. why bring in a guy that looks like grandpa and is on the back side of his career?
