Last year I subscribed to the jtstang approach to SMU Football (no expectations) until the end of the season when there was a good shot at a bowl game. Surely, I thought, SMU can do this. Once again, Lucy pulled the football and SMU took a dump. That was it for me...the light officially burned out on expectations of winning. I now expect them to lose.
Bennett should have been fired last year (at the latest) when he couldn't coach a TD on 1st and goal from the 1 against Rice. The NTSU loss should have also provided further justification. I wasn't disappointed when he wasn't fired, because I expected SMU to "give him another chance."
If you think Bennett will be fired before the end of the season, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. If you are expecting Orsini to make your head spin by hiring Jimmy Johnson, once again, I think your going to be sorely disappointed.
SMU Football is what it is. Whether it is apathy on the part of the administration and alumni or just plain bad luck, I'm afraid the hole has been dug so deep that we won't ever be able to climb out. The only thing that might....MIGHT...get someone worth half a damn to come into this place is MONEY and LOTS OF IT. Don't bet on it and you won't be disappointed.
