TOP and TOs

There is a direct correlation between winning at the college level (or actually football at any level) when you are successful in two categories: time of possession and turnovers. Our first three games bare this out.

Here’s the breakdown:

TOP Turnovers
Tech 34:31 0
SMU 25:29 3

NTSTC 29:00 4
SMU 31:00 2

SMU 23:51 3
ASU 36:09 1

If we don’t control the clock and the ball against TCU, we will end up on the wrong end of the same type score as the Tech and Arkie State games. I have not checked it, but I’ll bet the games we won last year show that we won these two statistical battles.

Now would someone inform PB and of this because this might be part of what he forgot about football.

I am way to lazy to check it out, and your theory is right more often than not, but I would almost bet that Tulsa had more TOP than us (I do not know about turnovers), and I would bet we had a substantial edge in TOP against Houston. They scored quickly on some big plays.

But then again winning TOP and Turnovers will usually win games. It would be a nice thing to do.

HOU 29:00
SMU 31:00
-1 turnover ratio

TULSA 34:10
SMU 25:50
+1 turnover ratio

mrydel is wise.
