Most of it is spot-on, of course. However, this paragraph is a bit misleading:

The key words now are "institutional control." As long as a school can show that it's making a good-faith effort to follow the rules, the NCAA won't feel compelled to drop The Big One.

There's been plenty "lack of institutional control" cases, and the NCAA hasn't felt compelled to drop "The Big One."

Getting to like posting here. We all know that the death penalty against SMU was at the very least unfair. Schools have been doing the same thing before and after. I think Texas politics holds some, if not most of the responsibility for SMU's problems. That was 20 yr.s ago. It's time to move on. I could go on about USC (a college started by Methodists), OK, FLA. Texas, OSU, U of Miami, on and on. But what happened happened. SMU and PB can pull this season out. I guess it depends on how much his players will give for him.

You actually blame the soldiers for the poor planning of the general? Did you not witness his battle plan in action? Are these not his hand picked finest? No, your confidence in Bennett is misplaced. May he come back as something more useful in the next life, such as a goat whose milk might be used to produce butter.

Perhaps we could have a grudge match between the goat formerly known as Phil Bennett and Kiki.

I have said on my few posts that you have, or we have the talent. I have said that SMU has way to low of expections for it's program. Willis said he is playing for his coach. Right? If this team is going to win they have to have some motivation. I have said in all of my 4 posts that SMU has the talent. They need to put it together. That is the coaches job. I really hate to say this, but If Justin is playing for PB and not SMU, then there will have be another QB. The players, are top notch. This is why people don't get this mess were in. Why, with players like Willis, Martin etc. do we keep losing? This is a mindset. I do hope you know there is a huge fan base outside Dallas. People that used to support SMU don't want to feel lousy every Sat. night. If PB can not get SMU to the Liberty Bowl then find a new coach. Period.

You may think they have a great deal of talent. There is not a lot of tangible evidence from anybody except on this board that would support you-but its a popularly held belief by fans who want to fire the Coach every year by the third week in September every year for at least the last 10 years. SMU's talent is somewhere around the bottom 25% of all Division 1A football teams. The talent level on defense simply is awful and what talent there is very small by Division 1A standards. SMU loses more games on February signing date than they do because of coaching.

What position does your son/brother/friend play on the team?

I can go by sports.com or by PB. I guess he has a different way of finding recruits. Football camp or something. The bottom line is SMU needs to start winning The school should have the $ to get a top coach if PB can't win. I haven't said this before, but Dennis Green might be a good pick. He lost with the Cardinals but who doesn't. A pro coach that might get things going.

RULE No. 1 Never believe a head coach about the quality of his recruiting classes.

Bennett lost with SMU, but who doesn't?

RULE 2. We got what we deserved as far as the death penalty is concerned. We paid players, we covered it up, we flipped a great big bird at the NCAA, we told them basically, "try and catch us" all while we were already on probation, and they caught us and gave us the whuppin we deserved. Just because the NCAA hasn't chosen to issue it again, doesn't mean we didn't deserve it. That's sort of like a murderer who raped and killed someone complaining because he got the death penalty while another rapist murderer got life in prison. The first guy still deserved the death penalty, but the second guy just got mercy.

May be true, Stal...but don't give the defensive coaches a break here. You as well as most everybody else here, if they noticed, have seen and continue to see coaching breakdowns on the sideline. They have trouble communicating, and they don't seem to intuitively know either the relative position of their team on the field nor the kinds of plays that they ought to call when they see a defensive look. Whoever is in the pressbox should be better...period. They simply suck. And the head coach and assistants should NEVER look like they a) are desperate or b) don't know what they are doing. Nothing says loser to a player like that.
