Rathole

Postby SMUstang » Sun Sep 23, 2007 9:51 am

Why keep throwing money down a rathole? The Southland Conference would be a good fit for us. We might be able to compete in it once in a while. Think about it. Would it be better to win a conference championship once in a while, or is it better to be in the bottom half of your conference every year?

Duke should have beaten Navy yesterday. Too bad, I was pulling for them.

Do you honestly think the same caliber of recruit that we get EVEN NOW would continue to come to SMU if we moved even lower down the totem pole? THINK! We would still be cellar dwellers in the Southland Conference within 4 years.

It takes money and a commitment to winning from everyone to actually win championships. Hopefully, Orsini is the catalyst.

Remember when...

After the breakup of the SWC, the rationalization about becoming members of the WAC was that SMU would be competing with schools whose AD budgets were more like ours. The great hope was that we could be more successful in that league. Then we transferred to the CUSA in hopes that once again we would find schools more on our level. We don't need less competition; we need more challenges to make us Pony UP.

I'd rather see the Ponies move up to a tougher conference and take our lumps there — and do whatever is needed to compete and eventually win — than go to a more mediocre conference.

Besides, last I checked, everyone in Conference USA is tied for first place at 0-0.

Agree with GIACSFP. Even being the whipping boy in a big time conference yields better recruits and more money. Sometimes you even get up to the top, like Wake Forest amongst others, if even for a short time.

Last time I checked, we didn't have a very impressive resume for anyone to be dreaming about a conference upgrade. CUSA is not our problem. It has as much or more potential than any non-BCS conference. The simple fact is that SMU has NEVER had sustained success in football. That should be the goal - to compete year in, year out for conference championships and to be really disappointed in going 6-6 or 7-5. Oh - and I should add to pack Ford for every home game and actually create a demand for SMU football tickets. Reaching that level in CUSA would be huge for SMU.
