That did not know that UTEP would do an Onside kick to start the 2nd half.
15 yard penalty Thank you Phil
Did you forget that too?

it was a great kick-even if it might have been lucky. SMU was ready for it. It just was perfectly placed. Stupid mistake by Bennett which came back to bite him in the [deleted].

pardon me, but isn't that just poor coaching?

We do not need a special teams coach!

same deal as everyone on this board who blamed Mike Cavan when Ole Miss came back to beat us in the Cotton Bowl on that fumble on the kickoff and then the TD from an All-SEC QB threading a ball to an All-American TE to win the game. No sometimes poor players make mistakes and sometimes players make plays just like Dickerson, James, Bobby Leach and McILLhenny did for SMU. Get some players.

So a COACHING mistake PUT those great UTEP players in a position to score a TD on us in the first 42 seconds of the second half.
And that COACHING mistake had an influence on the game.
HMMMMMMM!!!

I'm sure it hurt your pride to ADMIT to anything.

UTEP got an offsides call at the end of the half. We accepted the penalty and PB thought (as well as I thought too) that we should get an extra down because he didn't think a half could end on a defensive penalty. I seem to remember that in other football games (i.e. Cowboys vs. Redskins last year, I don't know if that directly correlates to college football too). But regardless, in a fit of rage he blew up at the referee and got an unsportsmanlike penalty.
Maybe someone with more football knowledge than me can explain why we didn't get an extra play to work with at the end of the half.

Mr. Patton:
A little friendly advice for free.
Arguing with Stallion is utterly useless. He is always right (even when he is wrong), so give up.
Coaching only matters at far flung locales such as Rice, TCU and Tulsa (oh, and SMU when Shuman put the SMU D at #14 in the nation statiscally).
Long Live Phil, defensive guru!

We didnt get another play because we declined the penalty. We could decline the penalty and take the result of the play (12 yard line, approximately) or accept the penalty and get another play, back at the 40. You only get another play if you accept the penalty. Declining the penalty allowed the clock to run out and the half to end.

i think bennett was equally mad the clock should have stopped more promptly at the end of the play. It was a first down. And by the way, our HOME clock operator should have stopped the clock anticipating the ref blowing the whistle.

American Hero should've known the situation and gone down quickly and called timeout instead of trying to keep going, going, going.
I remember a Cowboys game with a similar situation...maybe in the 80s? All the receiver had to do was run out of bounds; instead he tried to get to the endzone & didn't make it. Game over.

Not to be overly critical, but Sledge should have not fought for extra yardage which caused the time to run out. He should have known to go down immediately; we had a timeout and would have had enough time for a field goal, but by fighting for two extra yards he wasted those 4 seconds. Not good clock awareness.
