Two points:

1) Thomas/Sam got all 25 yards dragging their team to victory-nothing tricky-just pure athleticism.

2) There was not a single bad offensive call by Bennett in overtime as claimed on this board. Yes SMU ran-got 7 1/2 yards on Mapps first run. Then correcrtly ran on 2nd down as they should. SMU didn't execute. Willis bore a hole threw his intended receiver on 3 passes in OT-completely missed his man on the third and final opportunity.

Thomas/Sam made the plays-SMU didn't but please they were not bad situation calls by the coaching staff especially since SMU OLM dominates UTEP's DLM.

I'd say we shouldn't have run the same hand off to Mapps on 3rd and 1 that we ran the play before. But hindsight is 20/20 and we had run holes through their defensive line all day, so why think that time would be different? [deleted] poor tackling, special teams mistakes, and time management were awful. I noticed that PB didn't call one timeout in the last drive of the first half. We wasted probably 20 seconds deciding on a play.

You're right. It was second down. I'm not saying it was an unreasonable play call. I'm saying it was the same one we ran on 1st and 5 and that I don't necessarily agree with calling the same play back-to-back. It was 2nd and 1, by the way. Mapps lost 2 yards on that hand off, which made it 3rd and 3 for Willis's pass.

But Sledge is wide open in the back of the end zone and Willis missed him. Just a bad pass by Justin, otherwise we should have had a TD.

That would never work as Stallion would never run a play that includes throwing the ball in Zack Sledge's direction...thus missing multiple chances to make good long yardage plays. Zack had a hell of a good game Saturday spoiled by the misserable play of the defensive secondary and thus the loss.

I cringed when we lost the toss for overtime...which meant we would go first....then I double cringed when we had to settle for a FG....because I knew as tired as our defense was UTEP was gonna just run right over us with nothing fancy.....


Bennett made no bad calls in OT....we just didn't execute......a gutsy play woulda been to have went for it on 4th down using the logic that the odds of UTEP not scoring a TD were kinda slim and it would be better for us to convert a 4th and 4 rather than settle for a FG attempt (of which we already missed two)...

agree 100%. the textbook might have said kick a field goal. But the overwhelmning 'feel for the the game' vibe was that you had to go for a touchdown. we didnt make them settle for a field goal all day, what made us think a tired defense was going to stop them at that point with all that momentum and emotion they had? Bad call.

But had we gone for the TD and not made it how many of you would be second guessing him for not doing the safe thing and getting the points and forcing our defense to have to not only stop a TD, but hope for a turnover to prevent UTEP from winning with a FG.
