Are you telling me that NTSU has tougher recruiting standards than SMU? Or, do you think they traditionally get a lower caliber of recruits because NOBODY wants to go there? Explain.

Do we have a problem acknowledging that, just maybe, a top quality recruit doesn't want to go to SMU? That is why I believe a top-quality, recruiting genius is what we need--to convince recruits that SMU is the right place to go to play football.

Also, to your point about Nick Saban, perhaps a different coach may take more chances on prospects that have a risk of not qualifying.

I don't think that's the coach's call.

both schools have conference affiliation problems, although SMU has a huge advantage with CUSA vs SBC. Bottom line is that neither is BCS and that makes it unlikely either school will recruit many kids who think they have an option to PLAY at one of the better BCS programs (those who want to compete for a national championship).

I've been saying for years that UNT has an advantage in that they are a public school that offers more programs of study and with a large student population has much more potential for a large fan base, which I still believe is critical and one of SMU's biggest challenges. But for the marketing skills of Russ Potts, would SMU have been as successful as we were in the early 80's? We weren't the only program in the SWC paying for players. It's tough to promote a program that attracts flies to it's games. And don't start with the "if we win, they will come". Ask the guys who played for those SWC Championship teams about how empty Texas Stadium was at times.

I just hope SMU can find a "Pied Piper" for a coach as I fear UNT has much more potential to become the next S. Florida under Dodge than SMU does at this point.
