Coaching Priorities

The next coach of SMU needs to possess the following in order of priority:

1. Great at hiring assistant coaches
2. Great X's & O's coach
3. Fantastic motivator
4. Great recruiter

Reasoning:

1. Assistant coaches make or break you; gotta get this right, or everything else down the list becomes more difficult
2. A coach who can get the most from his players by putting them in a position to make plays and score points; for instance, all of sudden Willis becomes 2x as dangerous as he is right now.
3. A coach who can get the most from his players when they are not on their game or when they are in quicksand.
4. And finally, a coach who can sell the program such that kids want to be at SMU b/c of the football program, not the other way around.

Thoughts anyone?

4,1,3,2.

A good 1 covers a lesser 2. 4 is a must and 3 can make average good on occasion.

Right now I would take "one of the above".

I would put a coach that gets great recruits #1. Great recruits make the coaches and X and O's look good

Number 1 priority would just be to win a game. We seem to have a problem with that one, even though Rice and others don't.

Recruiting was supposed to be Phil Bennett's strength and see where that got us. A great recruiter like Mac Brown certainly doesn't need to coach real well. I would put great recruiter with creativity and flexibility as the two most important attributes. A non-BCS school will have holes. You need a coach who is creative and flexible enough to shape the box to fit the pegs he has as opposed to trying to fit the pegs he has into one size and that's it.
