What would it take to get Steve Spurrier here?

This is beyond a pipedream. It'll never happen. It won't be on the radar. But hey, that's what these boards are for.

But the ole ballcoach is my favorite in all of sports.

Nice job by HIS South Carolina defense against Kentucky last night. The darkhorse to win the SEC East this year.

Face it guys...SMU is football coaching purgatory. In most instances, after a stay here, any place else is heaven. For those coaches already on the outs and thus in hell, their only excuse for coming here is to hope to create a miracle and turn the program around and show they belong in heaven and not a continued existence in hell.

Money, money, and more money and that may not even get a top-level coach here. SMU is probably going to have to 'over pay' someone just to take the job unless they go after another unproven coach who will try to use SMU as a stepping stone to a BCS head coaching job. SMU will also have to tweek its admission policies and requirments to allow the new coach to recruit on a more level playing field with its competition.

So the guy coached at Duke, which isn't much better than SMU, but his ego will probably not let him come back. This is what is most disturbing to me about having Phil failed here is the fact that he's just another in a long line of coaches to do so here. I'd love for him to turn it around and stay, but you have to wonder how much damage his brand has taken over these years.

Maybe I'm in outer space, but I just see this job as an opportunity for some coach who has more $ than anyone needs to come to SMU and put his name among coaching greats. You have a story that is almost written for Hollywood. The coach that does it will become a hero to much of the country. I know many disagree SMU got shafted for all the NCAA's problems, however most of the country, I believe thinks they did too. Most would love to see this program back in the national mix again.

An ice storm in hell.

And even then he might rather go to see the ice.

Most of these posts are what would have been said if someone had asked about getting Doherty while he was still at UNC.

You never know ... including, we could still go 7-5. :D

Getting Spurrier here could accomplish TWO goals: a winning program for the Mustangs football program and the re-chartering of an Alpha Tau Omega fraternity chapter on The Hilltop. Spurrier is an ATO from Florida ('66). from the ATO web site:

STEVE SPURRIER, Florida '66
College Football Hall of Famer and 1966 Heisman Trophy winner. A two-time All-American quarterback, he passed for 4,848 career yards and 36 TDs before a 10 year NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers (1967-75) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1976). Head coach of the USFL Tampa Bay Bandits in 1983-85 (35-19), he has since been head coach at Duke and Florida, posting a 12 year record of 113-31-2 with nine bowl game appearances (prior to 1999).

How many head footbal coaches at schools in BCS conferences have been hired away to be the head football coach at a school in a mid-major conference since the BCS was formed?

Well if the ATO Boy's Club is part of the deal then we can do without Spurrier.
