Question: Most Disappointing SeasonWonder who you think is having the MOST DIAPPOINTING SEASON? SMU. with its woeful record; TCU, with its BCS hopes dashed; or TEXAS, with its National Championship hopes gone. And all of us with our Conference Championship most likely out of our grasps. Your vote? Mine is SMU, the others at least have a recent history of success and will probably make a bowl game. Will any of us turn it around?
Re: Question: Most Disappointing SeasonYa know what? I have no sympathy for UT or TCU or any other Div. 1 FBS school in Texas. After all the 'hype' with 'Pony Up!' and the great expectations put upon the alumni, students & fans by the SMU Athletic Marketing Dept. for this season, SMU takes the cake. Of course, if you listen to the folks on The Hilltop there's still time to turn this thing around (did the captain of the Titanic say that, too?) with 7 games remaining. ![]()
Couldnt agree anymore. After all the hype to finally go to a bowl and potentially compete for a conference championship to starting 1-4 with our only win being a shootout against a sorry unt team. Its not like we go consistanty go to a bowl and a bad season for us is considered going to the alamo bowl as in texas' case.
Re: Question: Most Disappointing Season
well put about all the marketing efforts and expectations. however, i feel that we have already hit the iceburg ![]()
its the simple idea that if they're willing to put a lot more money into promoting the team, there has to be a reason. i wouldnt waste money on a team if i know they will suck this year with the hopes of a new coach the next. add that with the fact that PB has improved his record every year and you have bowl aspirations/ great expectations ![]()
You're absolutely right. Steve-O is, first and foremost, a businessman. He understands you have to spend money to make money. He brought in Richard Sweet, who he determined was an excellent marketing mind. Sweet launched campaigns because his job was to increase visibility in the market, and subsequently increase attendance, as the team grows. With the radio ads, print ads, banners, billboards, etc., visibility is improved - not to the point where it should be, but better than it has been for .... the last 20 years or so. Sweet and Steve-O can't control what happens on the field or the court or the pool, etc., but they can do their end, and that includes blaring the SMU name all over the DFW community. They're doing that and will continue to do so.
1978 - Mustangs' record was 4-6-1; 1979 - Mustangs' record was 5-6-0.
To put this further into perspective, in 1978 our first five games were:
TCU, a win by the score of 45-14 Florida, a game played in Florida, a win by the score of 35-25 Penn State, a loss on the road by a score of 21-26 Ohio State in Columbus, a tie at 35-35 (we missed a field goal to win) Baylor, a come from behind win by the score of 28-21. Injuries to key players began to take a toll which resulted in many losses down the stretch. Aside from possibly Baylor, how do you think we would fare today against this type of opponent? What is our record in our first five games this year, and look at who we were playing.
Considering that none of the teams we beat had a winning record that sesason and the two teams we beat at home had 6 wins between them. On the season that 4-7 Florida team was the best we managed to beat. -CoS
Given our inability to win non-conference games, would a non-conference schedule of the three teams above be so bad? The paydays would certainly be good for the cash-strapped athletic department!! ![]()
I was at that Penn State game, a game we led until the 4th quarter when we just wore out. Happy Valley wasn't very happy at half time. Meyer had Ford passing every down, in pretty much a six receiver formation the whole game. Very entertaining to watch.
was right under the Goal Posts when Garcia missed his FG. Great place to see a game. Stunned silence-all Ohio St. fans knew we were the better team. Always wondered though how much Art Schlister bet on that game-but SMU whipped Ohio St on defense so they can't use that excuse. Ohio St. never came close to stopping Mike Ford. Went with a some fraternity brothers-one guy was the son of Cinncinnati Bengals Head Coach Tiger "Bill' Johnson and he proceeded to get fired on the Monday before the game ruining our Sunday plans.
We could probably take Florida down again with the current team. Maybe even tie Ohio State in the Horseshoe. We know how we currently fare against the Toads. At this point in the season I would love to beat a team that may win 4 games.
