First start: Bower said that senior quarterback Stephen Reaves is the favorite to start Saturday's homecoming game with SMU.
It would be the first start for Reaves as a Golden Eagle. The senior has been dealing with a strained oblique.
"He says he feels a lot better," Bower said.
A weekend off the practice field helped Reaves heal his sore side.
"I'm feeling a little better," he said. "I was making throws today that I couldn't make yesterday. It's getting there. It's really improving."
Starting quarterback Jeremy Young is still trying to work his way back from a high ankle sprain.
"He's getting better," Bower said. "He's still a little gimpy. It could be different. I've seen some progress."
Injuries: Defensive end Robert Henderson should be back on the practice field today after injuring his right foot against Rice.
Defensive lineman Sean Merrill told Bower that his back was feeling "the best it has in a while" during practice.

I did not see the first of the game, but I thought he started and played the whole game against Rice.

Martevious Young broke his fibula on the 3rd play of the game and is out for the season. Stephen Reaves played after that.

I wouldn't say that with such confidence. Rice's passing defense is even worse than ours, 119th I think, and got multiple interceptions off of him.

His injury was also more recent. He has had some time to heal now.

Thanks. I had gotten the impression listening to the announcers that the leg break was earlier in the year.

Did you know we are 8th in the conference, 95th in the nation, in pass efficiency defense?
Ahead of the likes of ECU (105th), Tulsa (110th), Marshall (113th), and Rice (118th). While I'm not advocating that we are anywhere where we need to be, I'd say we have a legitimate chance to not get carved up by a friggin' 3rd string QB with a strained oblique muscle.

I believe he is actually the 2nd string QB, he was the guy they sent in when the 1st string guy went down with the ankle problem against Boise State.

1. Jeremy Young (probably out with a high ankle sprain he received at Boise State)
2. Martevious Young (definitely out with a broken fibula he received against Rice)
3. Stephen Reaves (probable with a strained oblique, I don't know when that happened, not too long ago if it was bothering him against Rice)
The Golden Eagles have moved receiver Todd Wilson back to QB and gave reps to freshman during practice this week.

Are you talking about Stephen Reaves or Todd Wilson as the 3rd string QB? Stephen Reaves was the guy they sent in at Boise when Jeremy Young went down. That is why I am assuming he was the 2nd string guy. I am also assuming that he got hurt either at Boise or between the Boise and Rice games and that is why the other young started over him.

I guess you're right, Reaves is the second string and he's gotten a few reps throughout some of the games this season. Still doesn't help USM's QB situation though.
