Saw a coed wearing a t-shirt with the school's 'new name' on it today at a local restaurant. Her father says there's still a 'push' in San Marcos to go Div.1-A within the next 10 years. ROFL
He's a SWT alum and he's not happy about the name change, either! The name change became 'official' this week when Governor Perry did not sign the bill thus making it became law.
Read the next to last paragraph of the news release. Some Bobcats actually believe that this name change will allow the school to become more prominent in athletics, too...thus the Div.1-A 'pipe dream'!!!!

Info straight from the Texas State University (former SWTSU) Sports Information Department: The football stadium seats 15,218; basketball arena seats 7,200.
Here are the numbers for average attendance per game the past five years in football: 1998/6,333; 1999/7,914; 2000/12,417; 2001/10,674; 2002/9,775.
The asst. SID explained the 'spike' in 2000 as a surge in season ticket holders since there was a movement afoot to seek Div. 1-A status in 2002. My sources tell me that the current TSU president still wants to see them go Div. 1-A within the next 10 years.
Here are the numbers for average attendance per game the past five years in basketball: 1998-99/1,748; 1999-00/1,401; 2000-01/1,620; 2001-02/1,720; 2002-03/1,940.
Away game figures were not immediately available for football and basketball.

Since TSU is Texas Southern Univ. in Houston, shouldn't SWT be TSU San Marcos, like UT Arlington, etc. Just kidding, but I wouldn't be happy about the name change if I were a Bobcat.

I thought TSU was Tarleton State University. Seems SWT could have been a little more creative.

The majority of SWT alumni are not happy about the name change but their feelings fell upon deaf ears within the administration.
In addition to Texas Southern University in Houston, there's also Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX.
At one time, there was a movement afoot to have other schools named "Texas State University - (fill in with town name)" but more intelligent minds prevailed at those institutions. For instance: "Texas State University - Huntsville" (Sam Houston State); "Texas State University - Nacogdoches" (Stephen F. Austin State), etc.
