For those concerned about $ and a new coach

Postby Phxfan » Fri Oct 12, 2007 11:26 am

I took my own advice and wrote the UMC on the web site UMC.org. They gave me the following adddresses and phone#'s. I guess this comes out of Texas.
North Texas Annual Conference
500 maplelawn Dr.
Plano, Texas 75086-6128

Toll Free
800-815-6659
972-526-5000
Fax 972-526-5002

Or
General Board of Higher Education and Ministry
Division of Higher Education
615-340-7402

I hope you will relay your concerns about funding SMU to these people.

I thought SMU was only now loosely affiliated with the methodist church. Am I wrong?

Yes, you are wrong. (is that at a legal statement or what?). SMU as well as several other universities are owned in full by the UMC. Some of the universities are Duke, Syracuse, Boston Univ. and to some extent Northwestern Univ. The Methodist church, founded among others, USC.

This is why the GWB library is having such a hard time getting onto the SMU campus. The church must OK this thing.

I did not know about the ownership issue... what I do know is -

It is now a separate entity that is no longer run by the methodist church. Save for Perkins, perhaps....

Hey, Texas schools are ranked ahead of those in AZ, so don't start.

The Methodist Church owns SMU. How can alumni not know this? They do not interfere with the academic integrity of the school, ie class content, courses, etc. There are Bishop board members. It's a pretty hands off arrangement by the church which to me is as it should be. The academic integrity of the school is not compromised which is why so many members of the church are concerned about the Bush think tank which would not be accountable to the school. Also I don't know why we want a library when so many relavent documents will forever be made secret. There goes academicians coming to Dallas for enlightment about the Bush presidency. The dye is cast though. The library and think tank are a done deal.

There's nothing that will derail the W Bookmobile's arrival on campus. All these "obstacles" are nothing more than a fly on the windsheild.

I am sorry that SMU has to take another hit. The UMC still could stop this. Maybe they will. They won't.

Actuallly the UMC does not OWN SMU. It happens to have the right to appoint a plurality of the Board of Trustees which is a staggered term board. That is why the UMC can't impact the GWB Library. For one thing, trustees appointed for a term cannot be removed except for misconduct, not on how they vote. I believe that one of the UMC Trustees is non other than Laura Bush. The UMC keeps its hands off approach except if something really bad happens (as in the death penalty when the Board of Governors which was not permitted under the Universities by-laws seemed to be running the show), the Church acts. In this case, as well in the Bush Library case the UMC won't interfere. They let the Hari Krishnas hold moon festivals on the Main Quad at SMU, and the UMC didn't let that bother them. I forgot, "Open Hearts, Open Doors, Open Minds, the UMC."

Back to the original topic of money...
$$$ given to SMU by the UMC does not come from only the North Texas Conference. SMU may be located in the North Texas Conference, but all conferences throughout the country give money to the school...assuming that conferences are operated more or less the same. My mom used to work for the Southwest Texas Conference and now works for the Rocky Mountain Conference. The treasury department portions out $$$ for Methodist-affiliated schools. This money is distributed to SMU, Southwestern, Duke, etc.
