Final SMU thoughts from Tulsa
I'm about to rent Harry Potter at the hotel, but before I do that....
SMU's 29-23 loss is typical. It is what Pony fans should expect these days. SMU manages to play well for most of the game and then it manages to lose in the most appropriate way possible.
The Mustangs can't score from the goal line?? Doesn't that sound familiar (Rice, 2006)? Doesn't that sound like what coach Phil Bennett said would not repeat itself?
Unbelievable.
The defense played well tonight considering all of the position changes. The blame goes to the offense for its six trips into Tulsa territory that came up empty, none more glaring than the goal-line gaffe.
My interview with athletic director Steve Orsini is in tomorrow's paper, but here's a taste. I wouldn't be shocked to see Orsini make a decision very soon.
Orsini said he had not yet made a decision on Bennett’s future and declined to give a timeline. Bennett’s contract runs through 2009, but a bowl was the stated expectation for this season.
“Right now, I’m going to just evaluate the program and do the best thing I can for the program now and in the future,â€
