The Timming of Bennett getting fired

Interesting for a couple of reasons,

1)SMU is the first school to fire its coach this year. This send a message. We are serious about winning now. Yet another brilliant PR move by Orsini.

2)Would indicate we already have somebody in mind who is not a current HC or on staff at a school. Just have a hard time seeing if we wanted to go after a Paul Johnson, Major Applewhite, etc, those guys still have a lot of football ahead of them this year. That would mean announcing a new head coach in January. Thus, I would imagine this means we are leaning towards a Bowden or Barnett type of hire.

3)There are going to be a lot of jobs opening this year in 1-A. There was not much turnover last year and as always is the case, that means the following year there will be a lot more change. Being the first opening puts us in a unique situation. For example, Terry Bowden, here is a million bucks a year to coach SMU, take it now...or do you hold out to see if Ole Miss offers you?

4)Terry Bowden will be our next coach.

(Caveat: [and Stallion please don't throw up]: PJ's name keeps creeping out from under the radar.}

i think the timing has to do with two things:

1. recruiting. the faster we get a new coach, the faster we can start recruiting

2. available coaches. this year is gonna be crazy in terms of coaches getting canned, and Steve-O wants a head start on the other programs for guys like Barnett and Bowden

While painful, I agree with the timing. We need a new coach for recruiting. I still believe we can have a good class with the right coach.

Dwan.....very interesting post.....makes a lot of sense.

I could certainly live with Terry Bowden compared to
who we've had post DP.
