REPORT: Barnett puts out feelers on Mustangs job

ugh, I don't like that choice at all.

why? are you afraid of winning? I think Barnett would be an incredible hire. Then we'd have twin National Coaches of the Year. That's a statement. If we are judging by best Football Coaches he gets the nod-pretty easily. I'm just worried he's using us to get his name out. If he wants to job it would not take me long to end the search. My biggest concern would be age but O'Leary and Price have got to be older. He needs to get a young agressive Coaching staff but Barnett knows how to get things done.

Those that keep saying our school is "too classy" to hire a person of Barnett's background need to remember our school is the most penalized school, for cheating, in the history of the NCAA. I am not proud of this but in case you have forgotten, we had our program shut down for cheating. And the reason it was shut down for cheating had a lot to do with the fact that we had been caught cheating so many times in the past. Again, we are the most penalized school in history. Now explain to me why we think we should not give a coach that had some rough times a 2nd chance to do a job that he wishes to do.

Do you think that the NCAA is going to come in and put us on the death penalty again because we hire Gary Barnett? If he is the best for the job, hire him. If not, hire the person who is, but hire the best person for the job. It seems most would favor hiring O'Leary or Price if we could, why not complain about their baggage. Or are they ok because someone gave them a second chance? Let Orsini do his job. I imagine he will get the best there is available and his concern will be wins, not what people think.

He's probably the best option mentioned so far. Sure he may not have survived the storm, but how do you weather storm and still win your division, pretty incredible.

His comments on Kate Hnida were more than regrettable. His piss-poor not-really-an-apology apology, perhaps more so. However if it weren't for that, we wouldn't be in this position.

I have my misgivings... but.... again, he wouldn't be available without my misgivings. I have no truly negative misgivings about Bowden, but I just don't know enough about him as a coach. Same with Applewhite, no idea about him as an HC. Barnett you know what you are getting, a guy who could make Northwestern (Northwestern!!!) into back to back Big 11 Ten championships! (Northwestern!!)

Plus, the issue he had with the female kicker should never become an issue at SMU or anywhere else. There is no place for a girl on a guys football team!

Just once before you die wouldn't you like to have a Coach mentioned among the following names-pretty impressive list huh?

I saw Mia Hamm hit a 50-plus FG. If someone has her leg strength and wants to kick, there's no reason she shouldn't. Barnett's comments about Hnida were a lot worse than "regrettable."

I agree with you. I'm just trying to look through the schools eye. For the very reasons you mentioned they may hedge on this. I don't think they should on Barnett. If he can run a clean or reasonably clean program, then go for it. From SMU's point of view, will they say, lets not get in another mess. I think another mess may end the program for good. I'm sure that if he is the hire the school will keep him on a very short leash, at least for a while.

I think you are still hung up on the Methodist Church's role in selecting the coach. Let me clarify, it doesn't have one.

I'm not questioning a woman's ability to kick, but it is a men's team. I don't think it is appropriate, that's all.

Personal Background

Married to Mary for 39 years with whom he has raised two successful, accomplished children (Courtney, Northwestern 1997, and Clayton, Georgetown 1999, Denver Law 2003). Courtney works for World Relief and has spent her career working for non-profit organizations. She and J.J. are currently expecting the Barnett’s first grandchild. Clayton is practicing law in Denver and is engaged to be married this summer.

University of Colorado

After his turning around the fortunes in Evanston and leading Northwestern to the Citrus Bowl and the Rose Bowl, Coach Barnett was named head coach at CU on January 20, 1999. He had previously coached as an assistant under Bill McCartney from 1984 to 1991. After assuming the head coaching position, in seven seasons he led the Buffaloes to a 42-33 record. He coached four division championship teams and one conference championship team. Two of his teams finished ranked in the nation’s Top 10 and the Top 15.

At Colorado, he won the Big 12 Conference title (2001) and four Big 12 North Division crowns (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005). The Buffs were 29-19 in conference games under Coach Barnett, including a 14-2 mark over the 2001 and 2002 campaigns, the fourth best two-year record in conference history. His last four teams were 17-3 against Big 12 North counterparts, best in the conference.

Coach Barnett was twice honored as the Big 12 Coach of the Year by the Associated Press (2001, 2004). He was twice honored as Big 10 Coach of the Year by the Associated Press (1995, 1996). On average, teams coached by Gary Barnett have won division or conference every 3.5 years.

In 2004, the conferences’ media recognized him as their Coach of the Year after his team went to a Bowl for the fourth time in six years under his tutelage. The Buffs finished their season with a 33-28 win over UTEP in the Houston Bowl, concluding an 8-5 season.

Coach Barnett is a member of a very select group of head coaches who have twice coached the NCAA Most Improved Team. Several years after arriving at Colorado, in 2001, he tied for the top spot (also a plus-6), joining him with three coaching legends who have also accomplished the feat on two occasions (Paul “Bearâ€
