This is my very first post. I have enjoyed reading over the past two years and find myself checking email and heading straight to "Pony Fans." Anyways, just finished lunch with a gentleman who plays a prominent role in the athletic department operations from a day to day standpoint. I was told today that Franchione agreed to the buyout in no certain terms to "discuss options with SMU and allow his staff time to salvage the recruiting season up to this point." Now that he has agreed to the buyout he and his agent can entertain other positions. I was told this would all progress rather quickly. Just fyi.

I am confused, are you saying SMU is leaning towards Fran?
Was SMU specifically mentioned in Coach Fran's buyout?
Was the gentleman you had lunch with an "insider" from A&M or SMU?

It's all speculation at this point. The one poster mentioned it and I know GAC did as well, so there may be a little merit to it. I hope not, I can't afford $1K for a newsletter!

i dont know specifics. like i mentioned in the above post, franchione HAS accepted the buyout of 1.8 milion dollars. he accepted the buyout for the sole reason, to entertain the SMU position. he wants to act quick and decisively. he wants to get his staff on the road as "open period" is the sunday after thanksgiving. i am not writing to stir anything up...i was told this face to face today at lunch. franchione is also trying to persuade sony dykes from arizona to acept the offensive cordinator position. he wants to move away from his pro style attack used at a and m and he feels like you have to run the spread to win at a mid tier school. this could get interesting quick.

I think Fran would be an amazing hire. However, he still has not been cleared by the NCAA for accepting money from his website. I know SMU would have a problem with that.

why are people so opposed to Fran. He built programs at TCU and New Mexico. Has had a hard time at A&M but still has a decent record there.

I think it is the feeling that we would be hiring our neighbours' garbage. Not that that is necessarily accurate, but that's the perception.

He has recruited a lot of great talent from Texas and did a pretty good job at A$M considering he is in the same division with Texas and Oklahoma.....

I would consider him at the top of any list of people that have been mentioned. I just never really thought he would consider coming here or that we would look at him with the dark cloud over his head.

I hope this does work out.

This is the guy who left Alabama at the alter (after moving in and getting a little)...his commitments are as solid as a snowball in Hell. I wouldn't trust him any farther than I could throw him...and that ain't very far.
