It will not be Neuheisel even though I think he'd be a great hire. There is too much of a cloud over him for his NCAA tournament pool "gambling" issue and then the ticky tack recruiting violations he left at CU when he left for UW. Also, as an NFL OC, he probably makes more or close to what we could pay him.

There is no cloud anymore over Rick N. The NCAA and UW had to settle with him and in my opinion is pretty much bullet proof in the NCAA's eyes. As a OC in the NFL he will be making around $4-500K. He would gladly jump at the SMU job early after the pathetic offensive performance last night.

i think it would be a bad decision to hire someone away from their nfl job. most of the time, they finish up there before starting their new college gig, meaning that he will probably get behind with recruiting

That said, I do not think it will be Neuheisel.

You don't want Neuheisel, he can't recruit. Check out his record & he started strong with Colorado and Washington but started to fade when the previous coach's recruits left.
SMU doesn't need the PR nightmare of Neuheisel or Barnett. Barnett is the slimiest recruiter in the country. He would help SMU win in the CUSA but he would eventually leave in disgrace and SMU would have the biggest black eye in college football. You would be better off with Franchonie.

Let's see:
Win in CUSA
Recruit w/ slimy tactics (but recruit)
leave in disgrace
college football black eye
I don't know that that's necessarily a deal breaker for me, at this point.

A lot of times the "mudhole" is cleaner than tap water. You just need a good filtration process.

He'd be an upgrade in terms of performance (not ethics) from where we are now.

So what you are telling me is that we would get great recruits, win football games and have to fire him in about 5 year. I'm on board with that.

Hmmm. Sounds vaguely familiar. Except for the part about great recruits and winning.
