For the last seven years, SMU has had nationally competitive admissions for first-year students," said Vicki Hill, director of the school's Altshuler-Learning Enhancement Center and a member of the search committee. "I don't know how we can get people to see that without violating federal privacy laws."
Hill said fewer than 10 athletes last year had their files sent to the faculty committee for approval. One was rejected. Only prospective students who rank very low in both grades and test scores go directly to the faculty committee.

This is the part I found interesting:
Orsini and Bennett have discussed concerns about accepting transfer hours and offering a wider breadth of curriculum. Hill said those issues are being addressed, pointing to a year-old committee that evaluates transfer hours and the new School of Education, which is still evaluating its curriculum.
If other schools we recruit against already have these issues under control, it sounds like an uneven playing field to me.

One of the better stories describing the obstacles.
Is the faculty actually getting it? I'll believe it when I see it, but nonetheless, it was well-reserched and well-reported story.
Thanks, Kate

The committees that build the curriculum for a new major are fairly straightforward, but it is pretty time-consuming to build a new major. It took 3 months to approve a new class when I served on the Dedman Undergraduate Council & the University UG Council. The curriculum is usually the professors' area, and when they don't know the subject, they call in an expert to help. The next step is integrating it vis-a-vis the real world: i.e. employment...salaries, professor levels, hiring, etc. and a plan to implement. That could take a year or so in planning if they have other priorities as well. This isn't as easy as it sounds, which makes me irritated that they didn't start earlier on it.
And then there is this kicker, and it's a real one b/c my wife xferred from SMU because of it: Education doesn't pay real well, especially early; therefore, the ROI on a degree from SMU is questionable based on the cost. If you want to build a successful education department in a private school, go find one in another private school, and copy it wholecloth. THEN go tweak it.

Here what the Lady said:
SMU has had nationally competitive admissions for FIRST-year students
Blog you know I haven't concentrated on FIRST year admissions for some time now. Pull up any long post describing the problems with the Model that I have posted in recent years and I have conceded that SMU seemingly has admitted more FIRST year players with lower entrance scores. Now I said that info is confidential and I wasn't exactly sure but the thrust of my argument swicthed to Division 1A Transfers, JUCOs, curriculum and transfer hours long ago.
Now even that claim is total [deleted] and SMU is NOT nationally competitive-at least the way I define the term-for at least two reasons.
First, Every major school in this part of the country takes chances on 2-4-6-8 major questionmarks and prays that they get admitted. Most schools have 2-4 players who fail to clear the NCAA Clearinghouse every year-SMU has ZERO in 18 years. SMU is not admitting these kinds of marginal kids. BTW I am basing this info on Rivals Enrolled Recruiting Rankings which each year clearly lists the players of BCS conference schools who fail to qualify. I invite anyone who has a Rivals subscription to search for Rivals Enrolled Rankings for Football for 2007-probably still could find them for some previous years too.
Second, statistics from the 2007 recruiting year don't establish the profile for the last 7 years which she conveniently ommitted. THIS SMU team would still be disadvantaged based upon any recruiting issus that existed in the Class of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007. She can post them on smumustangs.com if they were somehow ommitted.
I see no distinction between what I have been saying for sometime now on Division 1A Transfers, JUCOs, transferrable hours, curriculum. Seems like an admission of an uneven playing field that should affect the program through at least the 2010 football and basketball teams even if fixed today.

2007 ENROLLED Rankings-unfortunately only for BCS schools-SMU is NOT nationally competitive for these players-SMU wouldn't have had a single player on this list for academic issues in 18 years.

Stallion, you are really misunderstanding my intent here. Here is a concession by the University that there was someone offered up for admission that was turned down. To me, that certainly suggests, almost proves, there is a requirement above and beyond NCAA minimum qualifications.

Oh Never mind. Really let's get this done. Get a Coach with experience. Get the damn Model fixed once and for all then I can join the Mustang Club and become a Cheerleader again.

So, your not a cheerleader, huh?? That's nice, you can complain but won't cheer. For some one that has more invested than most everyone else, I am suprised you are not part of the Mustang club...so where are you investments?

Truly I am one of the loudest Cheerleaders on the West side of the stands. I thought I was the biggest until I saw MrMustang1935. That's what kinda funny-I am a Cheerleader where it counts-to support the team but not to ignore problems in the program. I've tried to stop the crazy stuff since I started bringing my son to the games.

Our 5 year old could probably give you all a run for your money. Seriously. We took her to the game in College Station a couple of years ago when it was so miserably hot. Some kind aggie took pity on us sitting in the sun and offered us his extra seats up under the deck. He had no idea that the sweet little blonde in the SMU cheerleader uniform was the loudest SMU fan in the stadium. It was a proud day for us.

OK, then maybe this question should be asked....
If you were borderline entrance into SMU and had an opportunity to be borderline entrance into say, Southern Miss, Houston, Tulsa (not 100% sure of their academic standards), why would you choose SMU?
If I was borderline, I certainly wouldn't pick SMU, becuase regardless of the admission policy, you're a long way from the finish line once your admitted. Can SMU be competitive without these borderline entrance students...???
