"What caught my attention"!
Dan Orlovsky, chairman of SMU's athletic council and the faculty senate athletic policies committee, said SMU is close to turning the tide and that the new hire is extremely important.
He said changing the culture at SMU should include making a diverse range of people comfortable.
"It's a place that needs to be attractive to student-athletes of different races and ethnicities," Orlovsky said. "We need good relations with Dallas and a coach who can build bridges.
"It's a big job; it's a tough job."
XPony18, you don't have to reply, but think about what a top official at SMU is saying. I could start posting in a different name and you would never know (yes you would). I want the best for the sports programs. The rest of the school already is the best!

Hey Kenneth Pye (Big Daddy: former SMU Prez after DP) was very interested in increasing minority diversity at SMU too but not through athletes who he literally said we're "Mongolian Idiots by and large". I thought it was a very hopeful comment though by Orlovsky who I had never previously identified in the Athletic Department's corner.

Dan, like everybody else, has seen the obvious. He's not stupid, and he likes athletics.
And I dare you to prove that Ken Pye (God rest his soul) said the comment you attribute to him. I think you are lying, Stal. I really do.
If I am wrong, I owe you a huge apology, but I think you are making that up.
And speaking of Pye, as bad as he might have been to the program after the DP, I will say once more that Turner has been here double the time, and I would not say that change has been easy in coming under his watch either. And THAT isn't Pye's fault. He's dead; he hasn't been in the fight.

No it was in the Morning News. I found it and posted an excerpt from it a few months ago from that DMN Archives site. I'll try to do it again.

OK I popped in "Pye SMU Mongolian Idiots" in DMN Archives and a story on June 7, 1992 was the only story that comes up and was discussing the comptitiveness struggles of the SMU athetics department. It costs about $2.99 to get the full article. I purchased it once and posted it on this board. If its worth $2.99 you can try to prove me wrong. PS don't waste your money-he very clearly said it.

As I've said in a couple of posts over the past couple of days, I am new to Dallas. I only had a little bit of knowledge of SMU - the "death penalty" in the 80's etc.
From these comments, I am getting the feeling that racism has been an issue at SMU in the past? Would there be an effort to bring in an African American head coach? There are a lot of very qualified African American asst. coaches that do not get the opportunities in college football that they do in the pros.
I am 100% in favor of diversity and breaking cultural and racial stereotypes. I also believe that the best person for the job should be hired - regardless of those factors.
