What are the chances...?

What are the chances SMU is ever going to be a good football team? Not to be a Debby Downer/Stallion but how many teams are there in D1 football that are just not that good and won't be good any time soon?
We are a fairly small school in a state surrounded by a bunch of good football programs. Sure there are some smaller schools out there that have made their way into the top 25 but we are just so far from that it's not even funny.
I don't see how SMU is going to have a good football program any time soon. We are most likely going to hire a mediocre coach and realize that we are doomed to be an average team at best.

Since I have no idea what that stands for, I will just assume you agree with me.

Duh...looks easy when it's laid out for you.

In that case, she and I are on the same page.

I think it is a valid question...if there is another program in D1 that we would like to emulate, who would it be?
For those with better stats, what private school with a comparable size and academic quality is out there that has a quality program?
Wake Forest
Boston College
Northwestern
Stanford
Rice
TCU
Villanova
Vanderbilt
Tulane
Georgetown
Notre Dame
Gonzaga
I am excited about top 25 program, but lets be honest, the Pony Express was just a few years. Schools like us just dont compete year in and year out...and are happy when there are a few decent years.

that's exactly what i was trying to get at. and with the teams that you listed, i wouldn't say anyone sees those schools and thinks "great football team"
also, with the 5 teams that you listed, they are all part of major conferences (except for rice - who i don't think anyone considers a good football program to emulate)
we are still a small school in a very mediocre conference.
having said that - i hope we can get a good coach in here and start winning.
*edit* just saw that you had tcu at the bottom of the list. i think we would all be happier if our football seasons were more like tcu but even they seem to be dropping off - at least this year.

While Notre Dame is pretty awful this year, they really are the exception. All other schools listed have pockets of years where they are decent, but cannot sustain. Possibly, because coaches it is difficult to get all of the athletes through school.
I think we can compete in basketball, kinda like a Duke, but competing in football (outside of C-USA) will always be difficult.

The answer to the question is yes, if the University gets serious.. SMU has all the tools to be competitive in Conference USA, win the Conference and go to some low level bowl. That is very realistic. The only thing preventing SMU from accomplishing this on a annual level is the admistration. Unfortunately, the University is best known for the "school that paid it's football players." President Pye was brought to the school from Duke to change the national image as a party school like Flordia State, to that of an Ivy League, or more realistically, a Duke or a Vanderbilt. Pye wanted to get rid of Football but that would not fly in Texas. However, many of the limitations he put on the Football program are still being felt today.
I'm positive that we can be competitive and win Conf-USA, go 11-2 and maybe finish the season ranked near the bottom of the Top-25 under a best case scenario. I don't think we will ever let in the type of players that TCU does and knock on the BCS door like they have. I feel this because I think, unlike Pye, Turner sees the advantages of success in mens basketball and football and that is why Orsini was paid A TON to come to SMU.
Success in the mens basketball and football are the best thing that can happen to a small private school. When Doug Flutie played at BC, their applications more than tripled that year. Applications to Gonzaga have gone up every year since they have become a national power in basketball. TCU is known on a national level now much more so now than 10 years ago because of football. Increased applications for a small school make it more competitively academically. Also, when you get national exposure from a major revenue sport, your applications start to be more national/international. These are facts. And these are things Turner knows. And a more diverse Freshman Class with higher test scores is what the School wants/needs to become a Vanderbilt. For example. What is a better way to promote the university to high school seniors, a couple of Rhodes Scholars or a football game that ESPN is talking about, that is nationally televised, shows off the campus, and shows the students having fun in the stands and number 18 SMU beats number 15 Texas Tech?
Oregon has been on Game Day twice this year, applications are up 40%....that is a big state school, our coeds are hotter, and there are only 1,700 spots for the Freshman Class.
