Is Bowden still in the cards? The only thing I've heard on him was that no name news blogger who said he wasn't interested. Has anyone heard anything credible?

I know. I'm just so nervous about the next hire. We get a crap coach, and it's like pack it up boys shows over.

I feel like such a Pollyanna, but I really trust that Orsini is going to get it right. I'm still dying to know who the pick will be, but I have faith...unless they pick Fran.

Listen carefully because this is the last I will say on this: Bowden is not interested in the SMU job. He did not say that to me in those words, but his attitude is very non-committal almost patronizing, kind of like when you pat a 3 year old on the head when they draw you a picture you cannot make out. I suppose all you can do is trust me or not from reading him - he does not want to come to SMU.
I think he could change his mind, but only if as I said he realized before its too late that he will not be offered another job if that proves true.

What are you basing that on? A blog web site? Bowden is doing nothing more then playing things out to weigh his options. Sounds like the smart thing anyone would do. Doesn't mean he doesn't want it. Sure if a Big BSC school comes along and makes him an offer, I see him going to that school. But if a perineal 9th place BCS school comes along (i.e. baylor), I see him going to SMU. Much easier to bring SMU to a bowl then to get Baylor a big 12 championship. The fact is, I don't see Bowden getting an offer from a top BCS contender.

I still like Bowden, but 9 years is a long time to be out of the game.
I think the next SMU head football coach is going to be MIKE SHULA.

I'd take Shula too. Shula or Bowden I can live with. Everything else mentioned on this site would be a disappoinment.

My goodness, even Spurrier has been mentioned on this site and you are stopping at either Bowden or Shula? You would be unhappy with Nutt, Barnett, Fran, Mason, Johnson, etc. just to get either Shulas or Bowden?
Wow.

Wow.
I'm with Mrydel on this one. Since when did we get the right to become so damn picky with our coaches? We would be fortunate with any of the names above. Hell, I would take Big Bird as long as he can coach (although the gatorade shower after the inaugural win would necessitate a ladder or forklift).

I see all those other people as a risk. Sure, maybe they could do it but then maybe they can't. What I want is a sure thing. Bowden is a sure thing if there ever was one. SMU is at a major cross roads with this next hire. It can't be a F-UP. Another gamble like Bennett and Football at the Hilltop will only be found in sports books in the library. And sure, I would take Spurrier but he his just too unrealistic for me.

The only place is on some blog that said he wasn't interested. Seems like every other outlet re: coaching vacancies has but Bowden at #1 or 2 on the list for SMU. I stated at the beginning of this search that coaches with ethical baggage would not be considered. It's my feeling, playing this guessing game, that if you figure out a CJ connection you will probably see the next coach.

Of course Spurrier is unrealistic but you said you would want Bowden or Shula and no one else who has been mentioned. I guess that even rules out your excellent suggestion of Craig James with no coaching experience whatsoever but someone who Orisini should turn the reins over to if he asks.
