Interesting article on the "rules" for conference membership in the BCS. It appears to be in the eye of the beholder.

Obsfucation is the key to keeping your club free from being joined by have-nots. No crieria, just who we want in.

....I bet they were afraid that it would provide Exhibit 1 in the inevitable anti-trust suit. However, a good lawyer can make this kind of "secret" handshake and "knowing-wink" appear even more sinister. The fact is that it would be difficult for the BCS to draft an agreement which would pass the scrunity of an anti-trust suit under the present system.

Excellent point, Stallion.

The less your quantify the criteria, the better. Like a fraternity, the "in-guys" will be polite, smile, wish you well and turn away. They have the secret handshake already. Why share. Remember, chicks like the long ball (pass) with an invitation on New Years.

The only way this will be resolved to our liking is through the courts. IF the NCAA had any b*lls, they could shoot yhe BCS down with regional tournaments in a playoff system. They would have to choose not to sanction bowls which don't go along and have to choose the playoff teams like they do in basketball. It could prove to be the death of the NCAA but if they don't get control of the BCS, they are a "United Nations" of sports anyway. A lot of talk but no power. It could end up with 2 governing bodies of college sports but that is what we have anyway.
