from today's scoop:

SMU Closing in on Decision?

Sources in Dallas confirm Louisville Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe is very likely the choice to replace the deposed Phil Bennett at SMU.

It is unlikely SMU Athletic Director Steve Orsini has actually offered the position to Kragthorpe – or that the two have even spoken about the position – since Louisville has one more regular season game on its schedule. It's more likely the two sides are negotiating the parameters of a would-be deal through intermediaries, while also feeling out other options.

Steve Kragthorpe and SMU could be a marriage of convenience. For SMU, the Mustangs get a proven, championship coach (2005 C-USA Championship at Tulsa) with deep ties to the state of Texas (played at West Texas, assistant coach at Texas A&M) which should help significantly in recruiting. The potential hiring would also give Orsini the “splashâ€

It just doesn't make sense. Leaving a BCS school after one BAD season.. does he not have enough confidence in his own coaching ability to be fired up and have that burning desire to turn it around next year?

Personally, I wouldn't want a guy who walked away from a program after one year of LOSING. He had Brian Brohm this year and couldn't win. What's up with that?? It's the Big East NOT the SEC...

yeah, i just don't see him as the big "splash" hire we have been hearing about. leaving a BCS job for smu isn't really a big deal if they want you out at that school. Nutt will be leaving a BCS job too. Singletary would be leaving the NFL if he takes the Baylor job (which he interviewed for today).

Folks. We are close to if not the worse team in Division 1A. Some times when the pond is smaller it does not take as much to make a splash.

Actually, this pond will remain very small unless we get a tidal wave type splash...and soon.

Houston Nutt coached one year at Boise State prior to accepting the Arkansas job. His head coaching record in 1997 at Boise State was 5-6.

Leaving Boise State for Arkansas/SEC money makes sense. Leaving Big East money for SMU looks like a quitter.

Perhaps one of the folks who lives on the recruiting services can enlighten us, but why do some folks seem to think Krag is such a brilliant recruiter? According to everything I've read, Graham is the snake oil salesman who got stud athletes to West Virginia, Tulsa, Rice and now is recruiting like crazy again for t.u. When Krag was at A&M, he wasn't revered as any kind of star recruiter. What's the big appeal about this guy?

I'm wondering the same thing. He just doesn't have anything in his background that is a "wow" IMO.

It also doesn't take much to empty the pool.
