1. SMU Fired Phil Bennett mid-season
2. It hasn't been confirmed that SMU has talked to any coach.
3. Krapthorpe has said that he has had no contact with SMU, officially or unofficially.
4. Greg Davis has said that he has had no contact with SMU, officially or unofficially.
5. Terry Bowden hasn't said a word.
--leads me to the conclusion that Terry is the guy. Otherwise, if Orsini had wanted Krapthorpe, or Davis why didn't he just wait till the end of the season?
Answer - Orsini already had his guy (Bowden) and this extra time is allowing Bowen to assemble his crew as well as get a leg up on who to go recruit once he is announced as coach.

Terry Bowden might not have said anything publicly, but you can bet your last dime that his people/representatives are working the phones. Whether they're talking to SMU people, I have no idea, any more than any of the rest of us. But I do hear that his people are actively getting his name out there in the coaching circles.

It better be Bowden. Krag would be a worse downer then if it was announced that Bennett had been re-hired

Yeah. Because a coach that last won a game on September 12, 1998 is the
ONLY acceptable choice.

Whitney, I believe the rules, as well as ethics keep present coaches from being contacted during the season. The coaches have people and we have people. Our people contact their people. See how it works. This keeps everything legal and ethical, and it allows the coach to say "he has not been contacted. You can bet your sweet voice Whitney that Orsini has his people contacting the people of every coach that may be interested and/or available.

SMU Blog,
I guess [deleted] Vermeil being out of Football for 12 years really effected his performance. Or, Bill Parcells being away from the game for 6 years. Please tell me though, since I am so uninformed, why Krag is such a great great choice. I'm listening.....

doubt it, this Kragthorpe rumor wouldnt have gotten this much traction if Bowden was really locked and loaded. Its either Kragthorpe or this thing is wide open still. I guess i hope for the latter. have we not even tried to contact Turner Gill? i hope Orsini is not restricting this search to guys he knows first hand. thats a good way to miss out on a good fit.

Maybe Orsini is only recruiting coaches that come to his coaching camps.

Man, at first I was picky and totally didn't want Barnett. But now that I hear we are hiring the garbage coach KRAPTHORPE, I'm crying for Barnett to come back. Please come back Barnett, Please!!!!!!!!!!!

I simply am not dismissive of anybody (except Greg Davis). I am not a big fan of the people that seem obsessed with their guy at the exclusion of all others. I think that is a big mistake because you may be very disappointed. I have defended Kragthorpe enough. I have defended Bowden enough. I have discussed Barnett enough.
Any coach SMU hires is going to have some baggage.
"Life's too short babe, time is flying, i'm looking for baggage that goes with mine."
Yeah, I just quoted the musical "Rent." You have a problem with that?

Whitney, we are talking SMU football not the NFL. Let's keep it in perspective. Krag may be one of the few choices we have. Our choices are getting limited as the years go by and Orsini only has so many coaching friends. Most of them have good jobs at winning schools. Krag has shown that he can win in CUSA with minimal talent. Perfect fit for SMU.

I do think Kragthorpe has more of a track record than Gill.
