I always thought those 1983 Cotton Bowl jersies were darker because they were cotton (or some less porous material) instead of the normal mesh we wore.
I thought they wore those jerseys instead of the usual ones because of the expected cold weather. Because it was a different, thicker material it came out (or photographed) darker than the royal blue mesh jerseys. I've never seen one up close, so I don't know for sure, just what I assumed was the case.
It's funny, the next year in El Paso we wore the white mesh jerseys with the Sun Bowl logos on them and froze our butts off. One of the coldest games I've ever been to. Alabama ditched their Sun Bowl logo jerseys (if they had them) and wore thicker, cotton-like jerseys and kicked our butts.
I think we were trying to appease the Sun Bowl and El Paso people because some of our players said disparraging things about both when we got screwed out of a New Year's Bowl. We were 10-1 with only a close loss to undefeated Texas and the Sun Bowl was the best we could do.
Gawd, I'd love to go to the Sun Bowl now.
