Barnett upcoming headacheI must admit that I was originally strongly in the Barnett camp but had to come to terms that his baggage was not going to travel to SMU. I know he wants back into coaching but I saw tonight a foreshadowing of things to come.
On Thursday 11/29/2007, USA Network, Law and Order has a new episode about a college that wines and dines recruits at strip bars and has a girl accusing players of rape. I think (not sure from the preview) that the girl was a player on the team. It is advertised as L&O always is as "taken from the headlines". From the teaser the coach is obviously being made the scapegoat. Now I truly hope we do not get Barnett because the backlash would be even worse after the exposure, although I doubt that USA has that many viewers on Thursday nights. I just kind of feel sorry for him that the show is going to bring attention to him at a time he is trying to get back into his profession. I still think he is a very good coach.
I don't know what time it is on, but I bet that most of the country is watching a football game between two 10-1 teams.
Ch. 21 in DFW Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
I would be happy with Barnett...Really things should start to fall in place sometime during the next three weeks!!! We are ready for some definite rumors from some dependable sources....Go Mustangs!!!
If you read the articles about all of the Colorado situation, you would know that Colorado (aka the best party school in America, next to SMU of course) has a history of that sort of behavior. Even McCartney who is about as religious and hard nosed as they come, had problems with players and co-eds. Barnett told the players to show recruits around the Boulder, and the players took it upon themselves to take them to strip bars. Barnett discontinued the practice of letting players escort recruits around town after this episode. With regard his kicker, he didn't direct any rape and that incident may have even occurred before his watch. And he was cleared after a state investigation. After she left and she went to the press with her litany of problems, he said, she just wasn't a very good kicker. Remember coaches have run off players they don't want for years (even the sainted Darrell Royal did that). He may be a hard butt, but he's had success with programs that needed a turnaround. Lastly, I thought this L&O CI episode was a take off on the Duke Lacrosse scandel, they just made it a football team, because that would be timely, not the Colorado situation which occurred like five year ago.
When I saw the preview, I interpreted it as a commentary on the Duke Lacrosse incident as well. Somehow, Colorado football hadn't crossed my mind until I saw this thread.
From the USA Network website:
"When a key witness in a high profile rape is found dead, Logan and Falacci dig into the rape case, discovering a football team who protect their own, and an ambitious Assistant District Attorney with an agenda." Sounds like Duke with the ambitious DA angle.
