from the story:

Sherman said he started talking with Byrne late Friday after A&M defeated No. 13 Texas, 38-30. After that game, former coach Dennis Franchione resigned his position upon completing a five-year tenure with a 32-28 record.

I told you the Aggies would move quick because there recruits were dropping like flies. At least they understand the importance of recruiting.

Late Friday, whatever. That deal was done well before the game even began.

more from the story:

Sherman, 52, served as A&M's offensive line coach in the 1990s, but he's currently the offensive coordinator for the NFL's Houston Texans.

Dennis Franchione, who was 32-28 the last five seasons at A&M, resigned Friday after the regular-season finale against Texas. At that time, Byrne said the school would conduct a "nationwide" search for Franchione's replacement.

That nationwide search simply took Byrne south on Highway 6 toward Houston.

Sherman was the school's offensive line coach from 1989 to '93. He left A&M for a one-year stint with UCLA then came back to coach the Aggies' linemen in 1995 and '96.

In 1997, Sherman left the college coaching ranks for the NFL when he became the tight ends coach for the Green Bay Packers. He would eventually become the team's head coach prior to the 2000 season.

Sherman led the Packers to five consecutive winning seasons from 2000 to 2004. The franchise won NFC North division titles in 2002, '03 and `04. During that time, the Packers were led on the field by Brett Favre, considered one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.

Injuries crippled the Packers in 2005. The team finished 4-12 and Sherman was fired shortly after the season. He landed with the Texans as the assistant head coach in 2006, and he became the offensive coordinator this season.

Sherman will be inheriting an A&M program that hasn't enjoyed a championship season since 1998. Since Sherman has A&M ties and understands the culture, he would be expected to lead a quick turnaround and make the Aggies competitive quickly.

Agreed. Not more than an hour right after the game, the Ags were out on their message board already expecting Sherman to be named.
