What Carr says a successful candidate needs in particular at Duke, Baylor and SMU:

• Superior recruiting skills: "If you have talent you'll win, and you have to be able to attract that talent."

•Institutional commitment: "You have to have an unfettered opportunity to coach your student-athletes and an economic atmosphere conducive to success."

•Local knowledge: "A coach with ties to a particular school might understand its strengths, weaknesses and possibilities better than someone else," he said. Baylor had the apparent prime candidate: legendary linebacker Mike Singletary. But the San Francisco assistant, who played at Baylor, has said he will remain in the NFL.
