Roy L.: What are Fran's chances of landing another big-time college coaching position?

Brian Davis: I don't think Fran will get a big-time job anytime soon. It's hard to see a major school paying a coach upward of $2 million when he just got fired from his previous position. Oops, I mean "resigned" from his previous position. Franchione would be a great fit at a place like SMU or one of those other lower-level schools. But he's not going to Michigan, if that's what you're asking.

JKC: Who else was looking to hire Sherman? I have not heard his name mentioned by anyone else but the Aggies.

Brian Davis: I did not hear Mike Sherman's name mentioned as a possible coaching candidate for any job other than Texas A&M. Now, you can take that one of two ways. The cynic can say, "We hired a guy nobody wanted?" Or, you can believe that A&M hired a guy that many felt would stay in the NFL. I certainly never dreamed that Sherman would leave the NFL for a college job. I thought he was a NFL man through and through. That being said, I wonder if the experience with the Packers in 2005 burned him on the NFL a little bit. He had one losing season and got fired. That's the way it goes in a business. In college, he has a little more control. No salary cap, no draft, etc. He can recruit the players he wants.

dwillis1: Why do you think the hiring of Sherman has been blasted so much by reporters ... it was "a safe hire," etc.?

Brian Davis: Well, I certanly think it was the most economical hire. People aren't jazzed about Sherman simply because he wasn't a sexy pick. Or, as former A&M coach Jackie Sherrill told me, Sherman wasn't the "fireworks coach." But think about it. He had A&M ties and a successful NFL track record. Byrne didn't have to pay a penny to buy Sherman out of his Texans contract, and Sherman would work for less than Franchione. Sounds like a smart move, albeit a safe one, to me.
