To quote the Big Lebowski "New sh** has come to light dude"
Houston Nutt was the guy we were going after. We offered him the job, we were talking to Sexton, was a done deal and Ole Miss came in and stole him for us. Nutt was the WOW I was refering to. Personally a guy with 10 years of winning in the SEC coming to SMU would be a WOW, but thats me. Looks like him beating LSU was the worst thing that could have happened to us.
Looks like we are now going after backup plans and making a strong push for Paul Johnson at Navy.
But then again, my info was wrong before, hopefully it is wrong again.

If you recall I also informed everyone that Nutt had been supposedly offered. It was my understanding though that his interest was lukewarm at best and he was waiting to see whether he would be able to weather the storm at Arkansas.

Well Dwan, you pretty much took away all hope I had for a big splash hire with that post...
I'm starting to really go along with biggin...SMU seems to be shooting much higher than it should be here.
What a disappointment this search has been.

Barnett's waiting by the phone as we speak. It's not too late to save this thing!

Would that make Houston Nutt the Bill McCartney of the new millenium? Maybe not, I guess McCartney just stayed put when he left us at the alter, whereas Nutt went to another church.

I can hear it now, "and Our new coach is the best coaching prospect in the Nation and well worth the wait, and without further adieu, our next coach is....um, wait a minute, let me find his name here, um, its...., darn why can't I remember his name....."

Well, since we went after a guy like Houston Nutt, I hope we have the numbers of Mike Shula, Terry Bowden, Gary Barnett and Paul Johnson on speed-dial or close at hand. I don't think there is any hire that would be of the same magnitude personality or rep-wise as that group.
That info is both encouraging and discouraging. Encouraging in the way it illustrates Orsini's willingness to make a big splash hire and how it shows big names are willing to entertain SMU. Discouraging in the sense that it shows that big name coaches really want to put SMU money on hold in order to see if bigger money passes under his nose.

Haha. I hope it doesn't look like that.

I would be really shocked if Johnson agreed to come here. He's already making close to what we would probably offer, and we play them the next two years. I don't see Navy even giving us permission to talk to him. On the other hand, Orsini calls Laura, Laura asks tells the Commander in Chief to order the Commandant of the Naval Academy to give Johnson permission to talk to SMU or no boom boom.

I think it is un-American to steal the Commander of a Navy Football team from his sailors in a time of War. Just say No to Johnson -I don't want to have to say I told you so again.
