I Don't Think McNutt Was Ever Coming Here

he was Baylor bound as Krag was our guy...Baylor got screwed by Ole [deleted], not us. I think Fran jumped in the picture as Krag has waffled a bit, now it appears it is a Fran / Chan / still a possible Krag thing...I don't think Krag is a WOW hire, I think Fran is..and Chan is...we fit Fran's formula. Chan has what high school kids want, an NFL connection. I talked again to my Arkansas AD Dept. bro, he originally told me Krag, he still thnks that is an outside possibility, but he feels like SMU keeps sliding as other jobs pop....hell, why not Fran or Chan?

You are correct in that Nutt was never coming here. SMU never expressed serious interest in him, did not offer him, and never were going to offer him.

My Baylor source said he thought they'd sewn up Nutt too but after Arkansas beat LSU everyone got interested and Baylor lost out

Nutt was never coming here regardless of the LSU game.

I think the whole story will eventually come out, probably in novel form. The BOT at UA are talking about it. There is a big article today about how it went down. Nutt wanted to stay and the President did not want to fire him so they agreed to release the "golden handcuffs" on the contract which allowed Nutt to collect 3.5 million if he were to resign, and he did.
I would ASSUME if anything was going on it was through intermediaries and IF Nutt showed any interest at all in SMU it was only to raise the ante somewhere else. He was primarily playing Georgia Tech and Ole Miss against each other from the word here.
Gossip is big in Razorback land so more will come out but you have to wade through the craploa just like we do on this board.

I wasn't saying he was ever coming here. He also said they were talking to Bennett before I heard it here. When I say "too" above, I was just saying my source had also told me that Baylor was after Nutt, not us (which was what the whole thread was about).

Ok, understood.

I think we were a bargaining chip for Nutt with his real suitors. Everyone knows that we had assembled a war chest to hire a coach. Nutt probably used that as a talking point. I'm sure the search firm contacted him to see if he was interested, that's all he would need to run with. And if Ole Miss had to overpay to get him, that's great.

"Nutt was introduced in Oxford, Miss., on Wednesday as Mississippi’s football coach. His contract there is for four years for $7.4 million, with options for three more years totaling $6.6 million. Like Arkansas, Mississippi is a member of the Southeastern Conference."
Aren't we planning to pay more than this?

Depends how long you slice it up over and what you want to pay the staff
