AUBURN - A scheduled meeting designed to iron out details of Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville's contract didn't take place Wednesday, but the university continued to move toward formally offering him a contract extension.
Auburn plans to offer the contract extension by Saturday, the last day it can under the terms of Tuberville's current contract.
Tuberville would have until Dec. 31 to accept it.
The negotiations are taking place on the backdrop of a possible play by Arkansas to hire Tuberville. A source said Tuberville is a top candidate on Arkansas' list to replace Houston Nutt, who stepped down Sunday night.
Another SEC West school, LSU, may also be in the market for a new coach soon. ESPN.com reported Wednesday night LSU Athletics Director Skip Bertman said Michigan has officially requested permission to speak with Les Miles about becoming the next coach of the Wolverines. Bertman requested that the meeting not take place until after LSU plays Tennessee on Saturday for the SEC championship.
A scheduled meeting between Tuberville and Athletics Director Jay Jacobs failed to materialize Wednesday following a round of meetings on Monday and Tuesday. Tuberville is expected to be out of the office today when he and several staff members take their annual hunting trip to Arkansas. He's expected to return to Auburn on Friday.
Auburn President Jay Gogue said Wednesday the talks are progressing and didn't see any significant problems in the negotiations. But a source familiar with the proceedings said there are significant contractual issues to be resolved. The same source said Tuberville has not agreed in principle to a contract extension.
Gogue said his meeting with Tuberville and Jacobs on Monday "went very well" as did a follow-up meeting between Jacobs and Tuberville.
Gogue also reiterated Jacobs will handle the daily negotiations. Gogue has final approval on any agreements.
Tuberville signed a seven-year contract before the 2005 season.
Auburn could have extended the contract for a year following both the 2005 and 2006 seasons, but did not. The maximum length of the contract is limited to seven years.
Tuberville, whose financial package was $2.6 million this season, is set to earn $2.8 million next season.
