Paul Johnson vs. Phil Bennett..... fire in the endzone... DMN photographers following Bennett's every move.....

The Bennett era opens with a thud. Navy comes in carrying the nation's longest losing streak and upsets the Mustangs under their new coach.... Paul Johnson.

That was not so much an upset as an old-fashioned @ss-kicking.

True. I was sick after that game. I felt like I had my own @ss kicked.

that was no upset, Navy had the better athletes. We couldnt even tackle their quarterback, he was too damn strong.

Anyone have the stats on Bennett wins at Ford compared to Johnson wins at Ford?

Did Bennett have 10?

I was at the game too. On the side line PB looked like a deer in head lights. And Navy went at SMU with a "Scorched Earth Policy"...literally.

I remember going into that game having such high expectations for SMU and our new coach, PB. I remember afterwards thinking "Uh, Oh. What have we got ourselves into?"

The same thing we have been getting ourselves into for 20 years. Remove the admin from athletics and lets roll.

Possibly, but I doubt it. The two years before that game (and Johnson), Navy had been 1-20.

That was a bad day. At the time, Navy had the longest losing streak in the country. We let them break it on us.

SMU has helped a lot break many records.

I remember thinking that whole day that it was like being at a Navy 'home game' in Annapolis instead of an SMU 'home game' in Dallas...complete with the F-14s flyover, fireworks, John Phillip Sousa marching tunes, etc.

I remember it took us 3 quarters for us to figure out Navy's unbalanced line - I remember PB saying that they put in adjustments in at half time and kept thinking why not adjust after the first series or after first couple of plays.....
