Thought I'd drop you a line on my way to San Antone -
This comes as secondhand info, but my source this time is close to the situation at SMU: Orsini supposedly has several balls in the air but no one is secured yet. The names in play right now are Paul Johnson, Turner Gill and Chan Gailey. I am told that unless something goes terribly wrong it will be one of these three. Also confirmed that Nutt was lined up but blew up on Orsini at the last minute.
WOW???

that would certainly make sense; take your best shot at Johnson but then consider giving Gill his shot back on his home turf...to prove he is worthy of eventually returning to Nebraska as their head guy. Gailey the fall back because I doubt he will be in high demand.

Turner Gill, please. Could be huge in the Metroplex. Knows SMU firsthand and would be a great ambassador to the community. There will always be Paul Johnsons around, Turner Gill could be special at SMU.

I don't think it is any secret that G. Turner's pick is PJ. The question is are we in a bidding war for him? Remember, Georgia Tech just paid a lot of money to buy out Gailey.

Wouldn't it be ironic for Chan Gailey to come back to Dallas as the coach of SMU? I think the Cowboys were probably sorry they fired him after looking back at the Dave Campo fiasco. Then again, it probably turned out well for both since he's been a high paid big time college coach for a number of years and the Cowboys currently have their best record ever.
If Gailey did come here, I think he'd at least get more media attention for the program than anyone else SMU has hired - except for Forrest Greg.

Gailey has been a marginally successful head coach. What makes him a better candidate then a young enthusiastic guy who also knows Dallas - Turner Gill?

This is an absolute fabrication. Nutt was never offered here. Period. We never wanted him. You must be a Chevy man.

Chan is a deadbeat. Phillips looks like Mr. Enthusiastic compared to him Please. I think he'd be too embarrased to come back and coach here.

how many other coaches in the country have had the success that Johnson has had at Navy given the restrictions he faces? a hand full at best...he should considered at the top f the list for his talent and reputation.

Would Gill even come to SMU? I thought it was pretty much gospel that he was either going to Nebraska or staying in Buffalo.

Would you want to stay in Buffalo through the winter?
