I must admit I've heard Stallion and some of his minions tout Turner Gill as a viable candidate for the Head Coaching position here at SMU. I haven't said anything negative because i didn't know anything about the man other than the fact he has Texas ties.

I decided to actually do some research as opposed to taking Stallion at face value like so many others.

My initial thoughts were that if Stallion wants him and not Paul Johnson to become the next HC he must have at least won the MAC this season.

Turner Gill's record at Buffalo in two seasons.....
2-10 in 2006, 5-7 in 2007

and Stallion thinks this guy would be a better fit than Paul Johnson who's taking a very average to below average group of athletes to yet another bowl this season. I believe that's at least 5 straight, maybe more.

Just because he's been here a long time doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about.

You do realize that Buffalo is one of the armpits of D-I football, right? I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss what Turner Gill has done there. It could be argued that they are(were) in a worse situation than what SMU has had to deal with the past few years. The fact that he's managed to make them somewhat competitive says something. I discount the fact that he played Penn State and Rutgers(those were "money" games) . Take those out of the equation and he's not done too bad(a .500 record). He also had a winning conference record this season(5-3). Now if he can manage to get the team to win a non-conference game or two and replicate his conference success, then he might be able to get them bowling next year.

I understand what you're saying but if only Bennett could have beaten Tech(Money Game) last season, Baylor (Money Game) two seasons ago, A & M (Money Game) two seasons ago, we would have gone to a bowl. Not a valid excuse for a losing season. He improved from year 1 to year 2 but for the situation at SMU we need someone who has improved from year 1 to year 2, to winning the conference championship in year 3, to 10 wins in year 4, to their third consecutive conference championship in year five, etc.

Which is what I thought Gill had done based upon Stallion's enthusiasm. I wish Gill the best at Buffalo and don't doubt he will continue to improve from year to year. However he hasn't accomplished enough to be considered qualified for this particular hire at this time here at SMU.

Buffalo may be an armpit but recruiting to a service academy during a war is no easy task either.

getting a bad program a mediocre record is a terrible reason to want him to come to SMU. are you guys crazy?

I don't know what Stallion wants, but you are really going to foreclose someone because they haven't had big success at Buffalo??? Are you an idiot? Do you have any idea how long Buffalo has been Division 1? not long. Do you have any idea where Buffalo is? You expected him to win the MAC already, but the MAC has been stronger than CUSA for several years now. This is the same Cinderella MAC which has taken a bite out of Big 10 teams the past couple years. Miami, OH would slap SMU around like a red headed stepchild. 5-3 in the MAC in that situation is someone on the rise to me. Also, he has some intangibles and connections to SMU that have been duly noted. Probably lost on you though. Just shut up about the minion crap too.

Especially true for the ARMY coach as some 97% of all deaths from the Iraq war are from the Army and Marines.

What if Buffalo were to go back to 1-11 next year? Would you still fall back on this year's .500 record and COY award? Obviously, we've seen this first hand.

I fully understand Buffalo's situation, and Gill may very well be a great coach, but I just don't think we've seen enough to merit the job at this point. Let's at least set the bar at, "you've had a winning year". We obviously expect more than a .500 record here don't we? Prove to me you're capable.

Furthermore, I love how a week ago there was dismay over PJ not being a "WOW" hire, and now we're talking Turner Gill....that should fire up the fanbase...

Obviously i touched your nerve, meaning you're one of Stallion's minions. Anyway I didn't say he has no hope of becoming a success at Buffalo. I hope he succeeds there.

I said he hasn't had enough success there to this point to become the HC at SMU. It would be like hiring Mike Cavan or Phil Bennett all over again, in other words. I know he coached here as an assistant but who cares?
